
Cards Fall to Dayton in Spring Scrimmage

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Anna DeBeer had 17 kills and Alanna Bankston added 16 but the University of Louisville volleyball team fell 3-1 to visiting Dayton Friday night at L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.

The two teams utilized the experimental super point when a team declares that the next serve will be for a super (two) point with the opponent getting two points if the attempt fails.

Cara Cresse led with four blocks with Elena Scott adding 12 digs and Nayelis Cabello tallying 20 assists. Dayton was led by Lexi Almodovar's 12 kills.

In the first set, Louisville was down 5-2 and ran off an 8-1 run to go up 10-6. Dayton tied at 14 on a Cardinal service error and took the lead at 17-16 on a service ace by UD's Taylor Russell. Louisville regained the lead at 20-19 on after a super point. Dayton fought back to trail by only one at 23-22 after acing the Cards twice. UofL got to set point and then won on a hitting error by the Flyers.

The Cards fell behind early in the second set and had to use a timeout trailing 11-6. The Flyers put together an 8-1 run to go up 20-11 before the Cards pushed back with a 4-1 run to push the scored to 22-15. After Dayton had set point at 24-15, the Cards staved off four game points before falling 25-19 and tied the set score.

In the third set, neither team could open up a lead wider than two points. Tied at 15, Louisville asked for a super point and did not convert, sending two points to Dayton. The Flyers asked for a super point and converted for two to add up to a four-point swing and take a 20-17 lead. Two straight Cardinal hitting errors gave the Flyers a 23-21 lead and a service error by the Cards and a kill by UD's Brooke Smith gave UD the 25-23 win.

In the fourth set, UofL never led and but finally pulled within two at 19-17 on a super point play. The teams traded points and despite Alanna Bankston scoring five of Louisville last six points, the Cards fell 25-23.
