Louisville wins 4-3 in Blacksburg
BLACKSBURG, Va. – Louisville Men's Tennis got back in the win column on Sunday afternoon with an in-conference victory at Virginia Tech. It marks the Cardinals' first ACC road win of the season.
"I'm very proud of how we handled the situation in Blacksburg today," said head coach Rodrigo da Silva. "The conditions were very tough with a lot of wind, plus we lost the doubles point and didn't have our lineup at full strength. But the team kept fighting and we managed to come up with a win."
UofL opened the day with a Court 3 win in doubles as Etienne Donnet and Kosuke Nakanishi downed a Hokie duo 6-2. Virginia Tech quickly battled back with two doubles wins to claim the doubles point.
It was a back-and-forth battle the remainder of the day between the Cards and Hokies. Natan Rodrigues won in straight sets on Court 2 before Virginia Tech did the same on Court 4. Freshman Miguel Avendaño stepped into the lineup in the six-spot and won 7-5, 6-2.
Sophomore Andre' Steinbach gave the Cardinals their third singles win and point of the match with a victory in three sets before Virginia Tech tied it back up on Court 5. It all came down to fifth-year Donnet on Court 1, who ultimately defeated #60 Ryan Fishback 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-2.
Louisville will return home for a long weekend at the Bass-Rudd Tennis center with three matches in three days. It all starts with #4 Wake Forest visiting the Cardinals' turf on Friday evening at 4 p.m. ET.
