LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville men's basketball finished Saturday's matchup with Georgia Tech on a dominant 28-7 run, powering its way to a 79-67 victory at the KFC Yum! Center.
Â
Trailing 60-51 with 8:15 to go, the Cardinals (8-16, 3-10 ACC) held the Yellow Jackets to two points over the next six minutes and two field goals for the rest of the game.
Â
"My hat goes off to our guys, and this win is about them and their determination to fight through and win a game with their defense," UofL head coach Kenny Payne said. "It goes to show that they are capable of being a pretty good defensive team. We made mistakes, but I am proud of the way they fought. It's why with young players and young teams, you never give up. You keep pushing. You keep fighting them to get better."
Â
Louisville had six players in double figures for the first time in just over four calendar years.
Â
Leading the way was freshman forward Kaleb Glenn, who turned in a career night with 15 points and 13 rebounds for his first double-double.
Â
Glenn pulled down nine offensive rebounds, which are the most by a Cardinal since 2012 and the most by a UofL freshman on record.
Â
"My role I say is just to be the energy guy," Glenn said. "Get rebounds and be one of the best defenders on the court. Just bring energy, toughness, and aggressiveness."
Â
Sophomore guard Tre White had 14 points and six rebounds, while junior forward Brandon Huntley-Hatfield tallied 12 points and nine rebounds. Freshman guard Ty-Laur Johnson chipped in 12 points and five assists.
Â
Redshirt sophomore guard/forward Mike James and sophomore guard Skyy Clark each finished with 11 points.
Â
Georgia Tech (10-14, 3-10) led 32-30 at halftime behind a huge effort from Miles Kelly, who scored 21 of his game-high 36 points before the break.
Â
Kelly had just five points in the final 10 minutes of the game, however, as Louisville began to tighten up on defense and get to the free-throw line.
Â
"Whenever our crowd is into the game like that, like they were today, it gives us moments in the game when we see the other team starting to break down and fumble because they couldn't hear each other or something like that," White said. "I just want the fans to know that. Their support really does play a part in these games.
Â
The Cardinals finished 31 of 34 from the stripe and held the Yellow Jackets to 34.9% shooting from the field.
Â
"We're just out here trying to fight," Huntley-Hatfield said. "Basically, trying to turn our season around. Like I keep saying whenever I'm in here, we're a good group, and my freshman group is really good as well, as you can see tonight. Kaleb had a great night, a career night, and that's what he's capable of, and how we all see him. But it was an all-around team effort. We just want to keep improving, staying together, and pulling out these wins towards the end of the season."
Â
Louisville is on the road for two games next week, starting at Boston College at 9 p.m. ET Tuesday in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The game will air on ACC Network.
