December 07, 2024 | Track & Field
Geoffrey Kirwa set a new freshman record in the men’s 5000m, while Lucinda Rourke moved to second in program history in the women’s 3000m.
BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Louisville track & field teams competed in their first meet of the 2024-25 indoor campaign on Saturday with six distance runners toeing the line at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener.
The Cardinals saw four student athletes post times that ranked among the top-10 in program history, led by Geoffrey Kirwa's record-setting performance in the men's 5000m.
In his indoor debut, Kirwa set a new Louisville freshman record in the event with a time of 13:46.14 that shattered the previous top mark of 14:04.56 that was set in 2021 by Shadrack Kipkosgei. The time also places Kirwa only five seconds off the Louisville program record while currently ranking him third on the all-time list.
Lucinda Rourke made her indoor debut for the Cardinals after spending two seasons at Florida, immediately etching her name into the record books in the women's 3000m after clocking a time of 9:19.79. The mark stands as the second-fastest time in program history and shaves nearly 10 seconds off her previous personal-best.
The Cards also found success in the women's 5000m as Maddie Seaby and Layla Roebke began their indoor seasons with a pair of performances that rank them third and fourth respectively in Louisville history.
Seaby started her sophomore year with a bang, posting a time of 16:22.39 to knock roughly 24 seconds off her personal-best from her debut season a year ago, while Roebke made her indoor debut for the Cardinals with a time of 16:22.59.
The rest of the Cardinals will begin their indoor season on Wednesday, Dec. 11 with the Louisville Opener. The meet, staged at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center, will also feature Kentucky and Texas with competition currently set to begin at 11:00 a.m. ET.
