Louisville lost 3-2 in Friday’s regular season finale.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's soccer team rallied back from a two-goal deficit but ultimately fell just short in a 3-2 loss against No. 20 SMU on Friday night at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Louisville closes out the regular season at 6-6-4 overall and 0-5-3 in the ACC. All six of UofL's losses during the regular season came by one goal.
SMU (9-2-5, 4-2-2) controlled the opening half on Friday night. The Mustangs tallied the opening goal in the 13th minute and scored again in the 42nd minute to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The script flipped in Louisville's favor early in the second half.
Michael Lee curled a shot into the top right corner from the top of the box in the 51st minute to cut the deficit in half.
Ethan Subachan nearly tied the match two minutes later. A great through ball played the sophomore into the box, but the charging keeper deflected the shot away to keep the match at 2-1.
Louisville nearly leveled it again in the 60th minute with JP Jordan blasting a shot that banged off the crossbar and stayed out.
The equalizing goal finally came in the 65th minute. Subachan played a perfect return pass to Gage Guerra at the top of the box and the Cardinals' leading scorer buried his ninth of the season to tie things up.
The match wouldn't stay tied for long though. SMU answered immediately with a great individual effort resulting in the go-ahead goal just 41 seconds later.
Searching for a tying goal for the second time on the night, chances continued to come for the Cardinals. However, none of them found the back of the net over the final 25 minutes.
The Cardinals finished with a 14-9 edge in shots on the night, including an 11-5 advantage in the second half.
Louisville will now turn its attention to the upcoming ACC Championship. The Cardinals will be on the road in the opening round on Wednesday, with the opponent and time still to be announced.
