Lauren Masters delivers a pair of goals to lead Louisville to a 6-2 in at UC Davis
DAVIS, Calif. – Lauren Masters scored a pair of goals to help lead the University of Louisville field hockey team to a 6-2 win over UC Davis in the Cardinals' season finale Sunday afternoon at the Aggie Field Hockey Facility.
Â
"It was nice to get a win," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We wanted to play this game as if it was our last. We wanted to work hard on both sides of the ball, connect with our passing game and play improved 1v1 defense. We achieved most of what we sought out to do. It was also great to score some good team goals."
Â
With the win, Louisville snaps an eight-game losing streak to finish the season with a 6-11 overall record. In addition to Masters, Sophia Parker, Rylie Wollerton, Filippa Niebuhr and Izzy Bianco contributed to the Cardinals' six goal tally - the most for a Louisville team since Oct. 17, 2021 when Louisville beat Northeastern 7-0.
Â
The Cardinals attacked early in the game, scoring three goals in the opening quarter. Masters got the offense started in the sixth minute of the game when she collected a rebound off of UC Davis goalkeeper Sarah Lopez's pads and sent it into the cage.
Â
Two minutes later, Louisville struck again, capitalizing on its first penalty corner of the game. After a scramble in front of the cage, Parker sent a shot over Lopez to secure her third goal of the season.
Â
With 3:56 left to play in the first quarter, Caroline Pusey's cross from the left side of the field found the stick of Wollerton who was waiting in front of the cage to tap the ball in. Her team-best seventh score of the season extended the Cardinals' lead to 3-0.
Â
The Cards kept the momentum going into the second quarter, tacking on another goal, this time it was Niebuhr who on a feed from Tatum Kroon to deliver her first goal of the season.
Â
The Aggies (3-11) got on the scoreboard with 1:30 left to play in the second quarter behind a goal from Liselotte Koop to make the score 4-1 heading into halftime.
Â
The third quarter brought two more Louisville goals, both the results of penalty corners within a two-minute span. Bianco blasted a shot into the cage for her sixth goal of the year. A little more than a minute later, Masters connected on a feed from Aimee Plumb for her second goal of the game and fourth of the season to make the score 6-1.
Â
UC Davis struck again in the fourth quarter with a goal by Ella Franken for the 6-2 final.
Â
In the game, the Cardinals outshot the Aggies 19-8 with a 14-5 advantage in shots on goal and a 9-5 edge in penalty corners. Emily Young collected three saves en route to the win while Lopez and Emma Giesting combined for five stops for the Aggies.
