LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville football team returns home to take on No. 6 Miami in a battle for the Schnellenberger trophy on Saturday, Oct. 14 at noon.Â
The gane can be seen live on ABC for the 29th time in school history.
The Cardinals are looking forward to the contest this weekend after bouncing back in Saturday's game against Virginia but have a difficult battle ahead as Miami enters the matchup 6-0. They are just one of two undefeated teams left in the ACC and one of eight undefeated teams in the power four conferences.
Â
The last time these two teams met, Louisville defeated Miami 38-31 to clinch their place in the ACC Championship for the first time in program history.Â
Â
Even though the Cards have had success over the Hurricanes in the past, this Miami team is a lot different than they were last year and pose to be a very tough opponent.Â
Â
"An opponent in our stadium that is ranked No. 6 in the country, undefeated and playing very well right now," said head coach Jeff Brohm. "It is going to be a great test for us and I know we are going to have a lot of guys fired up to get to work this week and try to improve and get better and see if we can figure out a way to go out there and get a win."
Â
Miami starting quarterback Cameron Ward has proven himself as one of the best players in the country after transferring from Washington State. This season, he is first in the FBS for passing yards per game and passing TDs, and ranks in top-five in passing efficiency and top-15 in completion percentage.Â
"They have a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate and he [Cameron Ward] is really good. He can throw it, he can move, he can buy time, he has got a great feel for the position, he can get it to their playmakers and he makes that offense go," said Brohm. "In order to win, you need to be good in all three segments. But definitely offense and defense tie together and they have a legitimate possible first round draft pick at quarterback to go along with a very talented roster."
Â
Brohm outlined what he believes the key is to stopping Ward and Miami's dynamic offense.Â
Â
"I think he throws it best when he is on the move and when he can buy time and that is when the big plays are created because he is just so natural at doing it. So, we have to contain him in the pocket and make him throw from the pocket," said Brohm. "We have to guard as well as we can and pocket rush and make sure we push that towards him and not allow him to escape and buy a lot of extra time because he is very dangerous when he does that."
Â
Louisville and Miami will meet on Saturday, Oct. 14 with kickoff set for noon in a game that can be viewed on ABC. The teams will be competing for the Schnellenberger trophy, an award named after Howard Schnellenberger who was a beloved, long-time head coach for both the Cardinals and Hurricanes.
