Cards Selected as No. 5 Seed at the Morgan Hill Regional

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The University of Louisville men's golf team was selected as the No. 5 seed at the NCAA Morgan Hill Regional (San Jose, Calif.), which will be contested at the Institute Golf Club in Morgan Hill, Calif., on May 15-17, it was announced Wednesday afternoon on the Golf Channel.
The Cardinals were one of 51 automatic bids combined with 30 automatic qualifiers to qualify for the six regionals. The top five teams from each regional will advance along with the top individual from non-advancing teams from the regions.
UofL is appearing in a regional for the fifth consecutive season and the 13th time in school history.
In 2022, the Cards finished seventh at the Norman Regional which was played on the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. The Cardinals carded a 2-over-290 on the final day to finish 11 shots off the spot needed to advance to the national championships. UofL concluded the regional at 7-over-par after shooting 297-284-290=871 over the three days.
Senior Chris Francoeur ended his one-year stint with the Cardinals in impressive fashion by posting a top-15 finish. The Rhode Island transfer shot a 3-under- 213 (71-70-72) to place in a tie for 11th place overall. Jiri Zuska tied for 28th place after ending the regional at 4-over par while Max Kennedy tied for 34th after firing 77-71-73=221.
The Morgan Hill Regional features four of the nation's top 20 teams. No. 6 Pepperdine is the top seed in the regional, followed by No. 7 Florida State, No. 18 Mississippi State, and No. 19 Arizona. The fifth-seeded Cardinals are ranked 30th in the recent Golfstat rankings.
The Cardinals, who are making their eighth post-season appearance in the last 10 years, earned a bid after picking up seven top-five finishes this year, including a win at the Aggie Invitational and were tied for second at the All-American. The Cardinals shot a 2-over-par to tie for six at the recent Atlantic Coast Conference Championship.
Max Kennedy has been the team's top player all season, posting a 70.93 stroke average and is on a streak where he has shot under par in six-straight tournaments. He owns six consecutive top-10 finishes, including his first collegiate win at the Aggie Invitational.
The team's veteran, Jiri Zuska, a fifth-year senior, is playing his best golf at the end of the year, finishing sixth at the ACC and was tied for second at the Aggie Invitational. Zuska owns a 71.52 stroke average this season and owns four top-10 finishes this year.
Sebastian Moss also has emerged this year with a 71.62 stroke average and has posted five finishes in the top 10.
Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
Team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 26-31 at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
