May 26, 2023 | Track & Field
Trey Allen, Cameron Miller, Sterling Warner-Savage, and the men’s 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams secured spots in June’s NCAA Outdoor Championships.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of Louisville track and field teams earned another five entries in next month's NCAA Outdoor Championships as the men's competition concluded at the NCAA East Region Preliminaries on Friday.
Friday's action alone saw three individual athletes earn bids to the championship meet in Austin, while both the men's 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams punched tickets as well to continue the team's string of solid performances in Jacksonville.
Trey Allen began the afternoon by securing his third consecutive trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the men's high jump, tying for third as one of nine competitors to clear the final bar of 2.14m (7-0.25). The three-time ACC champion needed only three attempts on the day to lock up a spot in Austin, clearing heights of 2.09m and 2.14m before the competition was halted after establishing the event's 12 national qualifiers.
The men's 4x100m relay opened the day's track events with a bang as the foursome of Nolan Macklin, Cameron Miller, Jeremiah Willis, and Sterling Warner-Savage blazed to a time of 39.26 to place second in their heat and third in the overall field to comfortably qualify for next month's national meet.
Later on, Warner-Savage powered out of the blocks in the men's 100m and leaned at the line to net his first career appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The senior clocked a wind-assisted time of 10.07 that stood second in his heat and gave him an automatic qualification to Austin by just one-hundredth of a second.
Miller followed suit shortly thereafter in the men's 200m, winning the first heat of the event with a wind-aided 20.14 that clinched a return trip for the redshirt junior to the national meet after he placed fourth in the 200m at March's NCAA Indoor Championships.
The final event of the meet produced some fireworks of its own, seeing the team of Noah Carmichael, Miller, Robert Joseph, and Isiah Pantiere clinch a spot in Austin in the men's 4x400m relay. The squad recorded a time of 3:09.19 that narrowly earned them the final automatic qualifying position after an electric final kick from Pantiere brought the Cardinals from fifth in the heat to third over the final 100 meters.
The final day of the preliminaries will begin tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. ET when Maddie Horne and Katherine Coffey get underway in the women's discus throw, with Soledad Jean and the women's high jump following at 2:30 p.m. ET.
The Cardinals will also be represented in the women's 4x100m relay at 5:00 p.m. ET, while Katie Martin is slated to close out the meet for Louisville in the quarterfinals of the women's 400m hurdles at 7:25 p.m. ET.
