Savage, Welter Clinch NCAA Berths on Day Two of East Preliminaries
May 25, 2023 | Track & Field
Savage placed ninth in the women’s long jump while Welter tied for 11th in the women’s pole vault.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of Louisville track and field teams secured two more spots in the NCAA Outdoor Championships on Thursday evening, as Synclair Savage and Aliyah Welter earned bids to Austin on the second day of the NCAA East Region Preliminaries.
Savage kicked off the week for the Louisville women by earning a ninth-place finish in the women's long jump, leaping 6.24m (20-5.75) on her first attempt of the night to clinch her second consecutive trip to the outdoor national championship meet in the event.
Welter also locked up a return trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the women's pole vault, finishing with a clearance of 4.12m (13-6.25) that tied her for 11th place and sent her on to the championship meet for the third straight spring. The redshirt senior is the first Cardinal to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for three consecutive seasons since Emmonnie Henderson competed at nationals in both the women's shot put and discus throw each year from 2015-2017.
The Cardinals closed out the night on the track, seeing Katie Martin move on to Saturday's quarterfinals in the women's 400m hurdles, clocking a time of 57.79 that was good for fourth in her heat and 12th overall among competitors in the first round.
The men's competition will conclude tomorrow afternoon with eight individuals and a pair of relays set to compete for Louisville, beginning with Bryan Hudson and Adar Sheere in the men's discus throw at 1:00 p.m. ET. The day's events will be streamed live on ESPN+ beginning at 5:00 p.m. when the men's 4x100m relay gets underway.
