
Welter Wins Pole Vault on First Day of Joe Walker Invitational

OXFORD, Miss. – The University of Louisville track and field teams finished up the first day of competition on Friday at Ole Miss' Joe Walker Invitational, capping off the afternoon with an event victory in the women's pole vault by Aliyah Welter.
Welter finished with a final clearance of 4.22m (13-10) to take gold in the event for the second time this outdoor season after capturing three first-place finishes during the indoor campaign.
The Cardinals were well-represented in the hammer throw as four athletes earned personal-best performances in the event. On the women's side, Zoe Yeast took fourth place with a heave of 57.55m (188-9) that eclipsed her previous best by over five meters. Erik Fertig, Ethan Alyea, and Harrison Pawsat all earned lifetime-bests for the men, with Fertig's launch of 62.41m (204-9) now standing as the 10th-best throw in school history.
Justin Lehmkuhler, who is making his first appearance in the men's decathlon since the 2021 outdoor season, currently sits in seventh place with 3,058 points after five events on the strength of a first-place finish in the high jump where he cleared 1.96m (6-5).
The Cards also earned three new personal bests on the track as Katie Martin blazed to a time of 24.41 in the women's 200m, while Spenser Wolf clocked 9:15.30 and Forest MacKenzie ran 9:17.24 in the men's 3000m steeplechase.
Tomorrow's competition will begin at 11:00 a.m. ET with the continuation of the men's decathlon while the women's shot put is slated to get started at 11:30 a.m. ET.
