Cardinals Continue to Rewrite Record Books to Cap Off Split Weekend
April 01, 2023 | Track & Field
Ian Kibiwot, Synclair Savage, Jeremiah Willis, and two men's relay teams set new program bests on the day
The University of Louisville track and field teams finished off their split weekend between Texas and California by setting five new program records on Saturday, with four coming at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays and one at the Stanford Invitational.
"Our program was able to get a great deal accomplished this weekend led by several new school records being set in Texas and California along with outstanding training sessions by the groups here in Louisville," said head coach Dale Cowper. "I'm excited to see each squad continue growing throughout the early season competitions in preparation for May and June."
Jeremiah Willis led the charge at the Texas Relays with an event victory in the men's long jump with a wind-assisted leap of 8.06m (26-5.5) on his sixth and final attempt. However, his fifth attempt yielded a wind-legal mark of 8.02m (26-3.75) that eclipsed the previous school record of 7.95m (26-1) set in 2006 by Tone Belt.
Another Louisville record was set on the women's side of the long jump as Synclair Savage notched a jump of 6.53m (21-5.25) on her first attempt that earned her a runner-up finish in the event and topped the previous record of 6.44m (21-1.5) she set last spring.
After seeing both the men's 4x100m and 4x400m relay records fall yesterday afternoon in the preliminaries, both records were reset yet again in Saturday's finals.
The 4x100m relay team of Nolan Macklin, Sterling Warner-Savage, Cameron Miller, and Isiah Pantiere clocked a time of 39.15 to place sixth in the event and best the program-best mark of 39.65 they set yesterday morning. The foursome of Noah Carmichael, Pantiere, Miller, and Robert Joseph then closed out the meet with a seventh-place finish in the 4x400m relay in 3:06.44, roughly a half second faster than the 3:06.92 they recorded in yesterday's preliminary round.
The Cardinals secured two more top-five finishes in Austin, beginning with the finals of the men's 100m where Sterling Warner-Savage recorded a fourth-place finish in 10.19 in a field where the top-eight finishers were separated by only five-hundredths of a second. In the elite section of the men's high jump, Trey Allen placed fifth in his outdoor season debut, clearing a height of 2.20m (7-2.5).
Aliyah Welter was the final Louisville athlete to compete at the Texas Relays on the last day of competition, recording a clearance of 4.25m (13-11.25) to claim seventh place in the women's university elite section of the pole vault.
At the Stanford Invitational, Ian Kibiwot set the first record of the day early Saturday morning in the men's 10000m, completing the 25-lap race in 28:27.67 to beat out the previous record of 28:38.06 set in 2017 by Edwin Kibichiy and place 17th in a highly competitive field. Ryan Farrell also competed at Stanford, winning his heat of the men's 800m in 1:51.11.
The Cardinals will return to action next weekend on Apr. 7-8 when they travel to Ole Miss to compete at the Joe Walker Invitational.
