Men's Relay Records Fall, Stephens Takes Gold at Texas Relays
March 31, 2023 | Track & Field
Coming off an indoor season in which eight new school records were set, the University of Louisville track and field teams saw two outdoor school records fall and secured an event victory as they continued their split weekend at the 95th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
The men's 4x100m relay team of Nolan Macklin, Sterling Warner-Savage, Cameron Miller, and Isiah Pantiere began the day by blazing to a program-best time of 39.65 to win their heat and the preliminary round and qualify for tomorrow's finals. The mark bested the previous record of 40.34 set in 2000 by Arnold Jackson, LeVar Coleman, Brian Bickett, and Zek Parker by nearly a full second.
The Cardinals also saw the men's 4x400m relay advance to tomorrow's finals by breaking a school record, as the foursome of Noah Carmichael, Miller, Robert Joseph, and Pantiere ran 3:06.92 to top the previous best of 3:07.87 by Jeron Brown, Antoine Keys, Teague Peck, and Martice Moore that had stood since the conclusion of the 2016 season.
Brion Stephens then followed up the record-breaking performances by claiming first place in the unseeded section of the men's high jump with a clearance of 2.17m (7-1.5) in his outdoor debut after earning second team indoor All-American honors in the event earlier this month.
In the preliminaries of the men's 100m, Sterling Warner-Savage also cruised into tomorrow's finals after his wind-assisted time of 10.12 earned him a heat victory in his first outdoor appearance of the season.
The final day of competition in Austin will begin at 1:00 p.m. ET with the elite section of the women's pole vault and will conclude with the finals of the men's 4x400m relay at 5:05 p.m. ET.
The Cardinals were also well-represented in California at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic where both Sydney Partyka and Madeline Castleberry earned personal-bests in the women's 5000m. Partyka inched closer to breaking the 17-minute barrier in a time of 17:05.19 that placed her in the top-20 finishers in a field of over 100 athletes, while Castleberry's time of 17:24.70 smashed her previous best by roughly 35 seconds.
Isaac Kiprop took part in the 3000m steeplechase at the Stanford Invitational to open up his outdoor season, clocking 9:09.91 to cap off the third meet of the day for the Cardinals.
The Stanford Invitational will continue competition later tonight with Ian Kibiwot toeing the line in the men's 10000m at 1:58 a.m. ET and will wrap up tomorrow afternoon at 5:40 p.m. ET as Ryan Farrell competes in the men's 800m.
