
Cardinals Sweep Pole Vault to Close Yellow Jacket Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. – The University of Louisville track and field teams completed the second and final day of competition at the Yellow Jacket Invitational to open up the outdoor season.
On the weekend, the Cardinals finished with five event wins, set 16 new personal-best marks, and saw twenty athletes make their outdoor track debut.
"We were able to get our outdoor season started this weekend in Atlanta," said head coach Dale Cowper. "The elements always bring a substantial impact into play during outdoor track and field. We gained an opportunity to overcome adverse weather elements this weekend and I'm excited with the way our squads handled themselves."
The final day was highlighted by a podium sweep in the women's pole vault by Aliyah Welter, Carly Pujol, and Lily Fleetwood. Welter, fresh off an appearance in the NCAA Indoor Championships, claimed victory as the senior and Carly Pujol both cleared 3.85m (12-7.5) to finish first and second. Lily Fleetwood made her outdoor debut and vaulted 3.70m (12-1.5) to earn third place.
The Cardinals also earned an event victory as Jonah Hyde finished with a clearance of 2.00m (6-6.75) and Justin Lehmkuhler followed in second with the same mark that stands as a new personal best. On the women's side, Soledad Jean tied for fifth, clearing 1.63m (5-4.25).
The jumps continued to produce with a pair of runner-up finishes in the men's and women's triple jump, as Grigoris Nikolaou leaped 14.99m (49-2.25) in the men's event while Riley Burger earned an outdoor best of 12.08m (39-7.25) for the women. Freshman Autumn Bell continued her stellar outdoor debut, following closely behind Burger with a mark of 12.05m (39-6.5) that gave her a third-place finish.
The Cards rounded out the field events in the men's discus throw as Bryan Hudson earned a spot on the podium to take third with a throw of 53.79m (176-5) and Jorge Contreras Nazario finished fifth with a launch of 50.58m (165-11).
On the track, the Cardinals were led by a first-place finish from the men's 4x100m relay team of Isiah Pantiere, Nolan Macklin, Brenton Shippy, and Jaylen Cole in 40.61. The women's 4x100m relay foursome of Taylor Herbert, Kiyah Yeast, Olivia Jenkins, and Katie Martin clocked 45.37 to take second.
Other highlights from the track included Pantiere returning to the starting blocks for the men's 200m, blazing to a time of 21.44 to take second in the event. In the women's 800m, Sadie Morris made her Louisville debut, running 2:12.89 to place third, while Katie Martin was fourth in the women's 400m hurdles in 1:00.55.
The Cards closed out the event with the 4x400m relays as the women's squad of Katie Martin, Jourdin Edwards, McKenzie Bell, and Taylor Herbert clocked 3:43.86 to finish second and the men's group of Noah Carmichael, Jesse Casas, Robert Joseph, and Jaylen Cole took third place in 3:20.25.
Louisville will return to action in two weeks when the team splits between the Texas Relays and the Stanford Invitational on Mar. 31-Apr. 1.
