Cardinals Qualify Six Athletes for NCAA Indoor Championships
March 01, 2023 | Track & Field
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville track and field teams qualified six athletes for the 2023 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships, as announced by the NCAA on Tuesday. The championship meet will be hosted by the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. on Mar. 10-11 at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Trey Allen, Cameron Miller, Synclair Savage, Brion Stephens, Sterling Warner-Savage, and Aliyah Welter all earned a spot in the field with qualifying marks that stood in the top-16 nationally in their respective events.
Allen is set to return to the indoor national meet in the men's high jump after placing eighth nationally last season and earning first team All-American honors. The redshirt junior from Birmingham, Ala. enters the meet with a qualifying mark of 2.27m (7-5.25) at the Commonwealth College Opener that set a new Louisville school record and stands as the second-best result nationally. He was also crowned the ACC champion in the event last weekend, clearing a bar of 2.27m (7-3).
Stephens will join Allen in the men's high jump after securing his spot in the championships last weekend at the ACC Championships, finishing as the runner-up with a clearance of 2.21m (7-3) that puts him in a tie for the ninth-best mark nationally. The Indianapolis, Ind. native is the first Louisville freshman to qualify for a national championship meet since Makenli Forrest, Gabriela Leon, and Dorcas Wasike all earned berths to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2018.
Miller will compete in the first NCAA meet of his career in the men's 200m dash following a season where he reset the Louisville school record in the same event four times, culminating in a time of 20.27 at the ACC Championships that ties him for second nationally. The transfer from Florida earned the ACC title in the 200m while also recording a facility record and meet record, while just missing out on the ACC record of 20.26 set in 2018 by Clemson's Shawn Crawford.
Savage qualifies for the national meet in the women's long jump for the second time in her career after also competing at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships last season. The junior reset Louisville's program record in the event with a leap of 6.52m (21-4.75) at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational, a mark that currently stands seventh nationally. She also recorded a jump of 6.22m (20-5) to earn a runner-up finish at last weekend's ACC Championships.
Warner-Savage finds himself back in the indoor championship meet for the third consecutive season after placing tenth a season ago and claiming seventh in 2021. The senior holds the sixth-fastest time nationally entering the meet after tying his own school record of 6.55 at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational.
Welter rounds out the qualifiers for the Cardinals, holding the No. 11 spot nationally in the women's pole vault this season. The redshirt senior has now qualified for four national meets, two of which came during the indoor season, after her vault of 4.35m (14-3.25) set a new personal best and gave her the bronze medal at the ACC Championships.
