
Cards Place Seven on NFHCA All-West Region Teams

Mia Duchars, Emilia Kaczmarczyk and Julie Kouijzer were selected to the first team while Aimee Plumb, India Reed, Minna Tremonti and Merlijn van der Vegt earned second team honors.
The University of Louisville field hockey team placed seven student-athletes on the 2023 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I All-West Region teams as announced by the organization today. The seven selections tie for the most in program history.
Mia Duchars, Emilia Kaczmarczyk and Julie Kouijzer were selected to the first team while Aimee Plumb, India Reed, Minna Tremonti and Merlijn van der Vegt earned second team honors.

Duchars picks up her first all-region nod following a career-best season. The senior midfielder from St. Louis, Mo., dished out five assists and scored the game-winning goal in the Cardinals' double-overtime victory at No. 13 Boston College. She was a 2023 all-ACC first team pick and a two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Week while helping the Cardinals to a league-best six shutouts.

Kaczmarczyk (Melton Mowbray, England) takes home her second straight all-region honor. The midfielder and team co-captain was also a 2023 first team all-conference selection after standing tied for the team lead with five goals and dishing out a pair of assists for 12 points.

Kouijzer (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) earns her fourth straight All-West Region team selection. The fifth-year senior defender and team co-captain helped lead the Cardinals' defense to a 1.08 goals against average along with six shutouts on the season. She also helped the Cardinals on attack penalty corners, tallying three goals and three assists. Kouijzer is a two-time NFHCA All-American (2021, 2022) and three-time all-ACC honoree.

Plumb is making her fourth consecutive appearance on the NFHCA All-West Region team after leading the Cardinals with eight assists and standing tied for the team lead with five goals – three of which stood as game-winners. The senior forward from Canterbury Kent, England, is also a two-time NFHCA All-American and All-ACC selection, earning the honor in 2021 and 2022.

Reed, a redshirt senior defender from Louisville, Ky., has been a mainstay on the Cardinals' defensive unit since her freshman season. The team co-captain keyed the Cardinals to six shutouts and a 1.08 team goals against average this season and was named to the 2023 NFHCA Division I Senior Team.

Tremonti (Ann Arbor, Mich.) scored a career-high four goals and tallied two assists in her final collegiate season. The fifth-year senior and team co-captain delivered the game-winning goal in double overtime in Louisville's 2-1 victory over Iowa in the first round of the NCAA tournament. She scored again in the 3-2 quarterfinal loss to the eventual national runner-up Northwestern.

Van der Vegt, stood second in the ACC and fifth in the nation with a 1.07 goals against average en route to earning their first NFHCA All-West Region nod. The native of Utrecht, The Netherlands and graduate transfer from Hofstra posted six shutouts on the season and garnered ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Aug. 29. The goalkeeper was also named to the ACC All-Tournament Team after registering a season-high 10 saves in the win over Boston College in the first round of the conference championship.

In 2023, the University of Louisville field hockey team posted a 15-7 overall record and made its fifth consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, reaching the quarterfinals for the third time in the last five years. Louisville also went 3-3 in ACC play and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament as the No. 3 seed. The Cards finished the season at No. 10 in the NFHCA Coaches' poll after spending 10 weeks ranked among the nation's the top 10, reaching as high as No. 4.
