TOP STORYLINES
Â
• The Cardinals have played 54 times previously in Madison Square Garden, dating back to a 1948 matchup with Kentucky in the Olympic trials. Many memorable Louisville moments have occurred in the historic venue, including the 1956 NIT championship, Big East Tournament titles in 2009, 2012 and 2013, as well as the 1971 Holiday Festival Tournament championship in head coach Denny Crum's first season at the helm.
Â
• The NBA's New York Knicks call Madison Square Garden home. From 2020-22, Louisville head coach Kenny Payne served as an assistant coach for the Knicks before returning to his alma mater. The Knicks posted a 41-31 record in 2020-21, finishing fourth in the Eastern Conference.
Â
• This is also a return trip for two other members of Louisville's staff – Director of Analytics and Video Technology Gabe Snider, and Chief of Staff/Director of Basketball Administration Justin Perez. Snider worked from 2020-22 as an assistant director of video, player development and analytics for the Knicks. In that role, he analyzed game film of team and opponents to aid in creation of scouting materials, produced individual player-specific edits to support player development, and led on-court individual player development workouts among other tasks. Perez, who completed law school at Columbia University in New York City, previously worked as an intern for the Knicks.
Â
• Payne and Indiana head coach Mike Woodson previously worked together as assistant coaches for the New York Knicks. Payne and Woodson are two of 29 coaches in the country who were NBA Draft picks, and they're also two of the 51 coaches in the nation currently leading their alma mater.
Â
• Snider – an on-court coach for the Cardinals who worked with Payne and Woodson at the Knicks – was also a graduate assistant for Indiana from 2016-18.
Â
• Seven of the previous 20 meetings between Louisville and Indiana came with Denny Crum and Bobby Knight at the helm of their programs, with Crum and UofL holding a 4-3 edge. Crum passed on May 9 of this year at age 86, while Knight passed Nov. 1 at 83.
Â
• After allowing UMBC and Chattanooga to make 25 of 55 combined 3-pointers (45.5%), the Cardinals have held Coppin State and Texas to 5-for-34 from 3-point range (14.7%) in their last two games.
Â
• Louisville's 27 made free throws against Texas were its most since Nov. 27, 2018, against Michigan State. The Cardinals have made 75 of 104 free throws through four games while their opponents have attempted just 73.
