November 17, 2023 | Football
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It's a win and you are in scenario for the University of Louisville football team when it takes on Miami at noon from Har Rock Stadium in Miami, Fla. The Cardinals can lock up their first appearance in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game on Saturday, Dec. 2 with a win over the Hurricanes. A loss and the Cardinals would need a number of different scenarios to happen for them to reach the championship game in Charlotte.
Louisville advanced to 9-1 last week with a come-from-behind 31-24 win over over Virginia on Thursday night. Isaac Guerendo raced 73 yards with three minutes to play to put the Cardinals ahead 31-24. The Cavaliers overcame a 14-0 halftime deficit with a 21-point third quarter. However, the Cardinals scored on a 52-yard pass to Ahmari Huggins-Bruce to tie the game.
Quarterback Jack Plummer tossed a pair of touchdown passes in the win, going 19-of-28 for 243 yards, while Jawhar Jordan added 95 yards on the ground.
Miami fell to 6-4 and 2-4 in conference play after the 27-20 loss at Florida State. It was the Seminoles' third straight win over the Canes after four straight losses in the series.
The Hurricane defense racked up three sacks and nine tackles for loss, holding the Seminoles 136 yards below their season average. Linebacker Francisco Mauigoa and safety James Williams led the team with nine tackles and Mauigoa had two sacks. Safety Kam Kinchens added six stops and linebacker Wesley Bissainthe recorded five tackles, including three TFLs.
Emory Williams, the first UM true freshman quarterback to start against FSU since Brad Kaaya in 2014, threw for 175 yards and two touchdowns – both to wide receiver Jacolby George, who had a career day with five receptions for 153 yards. Quarterback Tyler Van Dyke, who had started eight games this year, came in for an injured Williams late in the game.
Running backs Don Chaney, Jr. and Mark Fletcher, Jr. combined for 132 yards, with Chaney averaging 7.1 yards per carry.
The Canes bring the 19th-best defense in the country, allowing just 312.5 yards per game and the sixth-best rushing defense at 86.0 yards per game.
Wide receiver Xavier Restrep has caught 60 passes for 683 yards and four touchdowns, while Jacolby Georgia is second with 46 catches for 707 yards and seven touchdowns.
Francisco Mauigoa and Rueben Bain lead the defense with 6.5 sacks. Kamren Kinchens is first on the team with four interceptions.
