Cards Strong in Season Debut at Head of the Black Warrior River
October 28, 2023 | Rowing
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Louisville rowing team opened the 2023-24 season with a solid showing at the Head of the Black Warrior River hosted by Alabama.
Â
"This group remains focused on showing up with accurate and authentic performances on race day," said UofL head coach Derek Copeland. "The coaches have been impressed with how they have been performing at practice the last few weeks and it was good for the athletes to see it transfer over to the race."
Â
The Varsity 4s raced to a first-place finish with a time of 18:27.6 in the 16-boat field which also included Miami and Alabama. The 2V4 and 3V4 finished fifth and sixth with times of 18:46.7 and 18:52.6 respectively. The 4V4 boat came in at 19:38.4 for 12th.
Â
The Novice 8s finished second in their debut race with a time of 19:58.1.
Â
"We have a lot of speed to gain through some clear technical deficiencies," said Copeland. "We will be focused on getting our catches more direct and expect to see significant improvement over the next two weeks."
Â
The Cardinals will return to action on Nov. 12 when they travel to Charlottesville, Va., to compete in the Rivanna Romp.
