Savage's Record-Setting Night Leads Louisville on Day One of the Cardinal Classic
January 13, 2023 | Track & Field
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Synclair Savage broke the school record in the women's long jump to lead the University of Louisville's track and field team on day one of the Cardinal Classic at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center.
Savage set the new school-best mark with a leap of 6.44m (21-1.5) that also set a new meet record and facility record. The junior from Kennesaw, Ga. bested the previous record of 6.27m (20-7) that was set by Alexis Gibbons in 2018 on all six of her attempts on the evening.
Savage was one of three event winners on the night, all in women's field events, while ten other athletes set personal bests to start off the new year for the Cardinals.
"Our team got off to a great start at the Cardinal Classic today," said head coach Dale Cowper. "Synclair Savage led the way with a new school record in the women's long jump and a performance that will likely advance her to the NCAA Championships in March."
Senior Aliyah Welter picked up her second event victory of the season, winning the women's pole vault with a clearance of 4.27m (14-0) after also winning the event in the Commonwealth College Opener on Dec. 3. The Cardinals swept the top four places in the event as Lily Fleetwood and Carly Pujol picked up second and third place with marks of 4.07m (13-4.25), earning them both personal bests, while Auriane Viola vaulted her way to fourth by clearing a bar of 3.92m (12-10.25).
"I'm fired up to see our women's vault group continue to represent the program at the highest level with Aliyah Welter leading the way at 14 feet," added Cowper. "Lily Fleetwood and Carly Pujol also excelled, clearing new personal best heights of 13'4"."
Zoë Yeast claimed the women's weight throw with a personal-best heave of 19.67m (64-6.5). Katherine Coffey placed third in the event with a throw of 18.94m (62-1.75), while Tiana Bazie's mark of 18.32m (60-1.25) earned her fifth place and a new personal record.
"Zoë Yeast was able to claim her first collegiate victory in the women's weight throw. She has been working through some training limitations but came out and competed at a high level today with outstanding composure."
The men's weight throw also saw three Cardinals in the top five, led by Ethan Alyea's third-place finish with a personal-best launch of 19.56m (64-2.25). Adar Sheere placed fourth with a mark of 18.36m (60-3) and Erik Fertig was fifth with a heave of 18.21m (59-9).
"Ethan Alyea led the men's team with a new personal best in the men's weight throw. He's put a lot of effort into the preparation for this indoor season and it's beginning to pay off in the ring."
Taylor Herbert advanced to the finals in the women's 60m dash, blazing to a time of 7.38 to continue her strong start to the season. Katie Martin also found success in the sprints, clocking 55.92 to place fifth in the women's 400m dash.
"Taylor Herbert led us on the track today with an outstanding early-season performance in the women's 60m dash. She has the ability to compete at the highest level if she continues progressing from her early-season races."
Along with Savage's success in the sand pit, Jeremiah Willis leapt to third place in the men's long jump with a mark of 7.55m (24-9.25), and Ariel Lawrence was fourth in the women's long jump by jumping 5.97m (19-7).
The Cardinals will return to action tomorrow for day two of the Cardinal Classic at 10 a.m. The meet will begin with the men's pole vault and the women's high jump, triple jump, and shot put and will close out with the men's 4x400m relay at 12:30 p.m.
