Plumb's Late Goal Sends Cards to 2-1 Win at No. 11 Penn State
August 28, 2022 | Field Hockey
COLLEGE PARK, Pa. – Junior Aimee Plumb's penalty stroke goal in the fourth quarter broke a 1-1 tie and sent the ninth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 2-1 win over No. 11 Penn State Sunday afternoon at the Penn State Field Hockey Complex.
Â
"I am so proud of this young team," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We took some lessons from Friday's game and we're able to connect some great attacking play. The winner on the day was the gritty defense all over the pitch against a quality opponent. We can enjoy a solid weekend for 24 hours then it's back to business next weekend."
Â
The Nittany Lions (1-1) got on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter behind Sophia Gladieux's unassisted goal.
Â
Penn State took the lead into halftime after holding an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 3-2 edge in penalty corners in the first half. Louisville goalkeeper Sasha Elliott collected seven saves while Penn State's Brie Barraco tallied a pair of stops.
Â
After regrouping during the break, the Cards (2-0) answered with 27 seconds remaining in the third quarter when Katie Schneider delivered her first goal of the season and 20th of her career to even the score at 1-1.
Â
The Cardinals continued to attack, delivering four shots, three on goal, in the first 10 minutes of the fourth quarter before being awarded a penalty stroke with 4:20 left to play in regulation. Plumb converted her attempt, delivering her first goal of the season and 14th of her career to put the Cards on top 2-1.
Â
Louisville withstood a pair of Penn State corners in the final 30 seconds of play. Elliott turned back a shot on goal with her eighth save of the game and a Louisville defender blocked a shot on a second corner to keep the Nittany Lions at bay and preserve the win.
Â
In the game, Penn State outshot Louisville 14-9 with a 9-7 edge in shots on goal and held a 5-3 advantage in penalty corners. Elliott registered eight saves in the game while Barraco had five.
Â
Up Next: The Cardinals continue their early season road swing next weekend when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. next weekend to face Penn and No. 13 Princeton as part of the ACC/Ivy League Conference Crossover.
