FOOTBALL: What to Know Day 12
August 16, 2022 | Football
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It's no secret the University of Louisville football team needed to address needs in the secondary following the loss in the bowl game to Air Force. The Cardinals lost a couple od players in the portal, and depth was going to be a concern in 2022.
Head coach Scott Satterfield and staff fixed the issue by adding four players in the transfer portal.
One of the key additions was Florida State transfer Jarvis Brownlee at cornerback. The third-year player appeared in 24 games at FSU , recording 78 tackles and three interceptions. He was coming off his best year in 2021, registering 51 tackles and a pair of interceptions.
The native of Miami recorded ten tackles against Miami last year and also returned an interception for a score in a win over UMass.Â
"I'm an experienced guy and I've been playing this game for a long time and adjustment, to me, I felt like it was easy. I felt like I already had a bond with these guys, I already knew a couple of guys that was over here who I was really good friends with, that I'm still good friends with. So, me just come in here, I just felt the love was here...once I got in, I just felt comfortable."
"His attitude is awesome," defensive coordinator Bryan Brown said. "He came in and I started him low on the depth chart and he's working his way up."
Brownlee quickly adjusted to his new teammates and schemes, and has been a standout in the first two weeks of practice. His ball skills and ability to high point the football have stood out through the first 12 practices.
"To go out there and practice I was a little nervous knowing that I'm going to new facility, like, everything is new around me," Brownlee said. "After that first day, man I was just comfortable, loving it. I'm happy, so it was easy to me to transfer. It was easy just knowing that I got guys here that I already knew and great bonds with the coaches. So, I felt like it wasn't a tough thing to do."
With 10 starters returning, Brownlee has benefitted from the veteran presence in the locker room. He has relied on Yasir Abdullah, Monty Montgomery, Momo Sanogo, Yaya Diaby and All-ACCÂ corner Tre Clark, who has earned all-league honors in the last two seasons.
"Tre Clark who have a really good bond with and to this day I still ask questions about him, about my technique that I can get better at," Brownlee said. "You know, playing off coverage, my odd discipline, just learning new things from a guy that I knew is a great cat, he's a great kid. Great on the field, man. And just learning from these guys, asking them questions, getting the help that I need or getting the answers I need to develop my game. And knowing I'm developing their game as well. I feel like it's been great."
Brown has been impressed by the play and athleticism of Brownlee, and it's allowed him be more versatile with his rotations.
"He started a lot of games for those guys the last couple years and played multiple positions," Brown said. "So, it's great to have him on your team. He doesn't shy away from contact. He doesn't shy away from being competitive and talking a little smack here and there. But, excited to have him."
