Six Cardinals to Compete in 2022 Toyota USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships

Six University of Louisville track and field athletes: Gabriela Leon, Aliyah Welter, Trey Allen, Sterling Warner-Savage and Jeremiah Willis have been selected to compete in the 2022 Toyota USA Track & Field Outdoor Championship which will be held June 23-26 at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Ty McPhail has qualified for the U20 Outdoor Championships which will also be held at Hayward Field at that time.

The meet will serve as the qualifying event for the 2022Â World Athletics Outdoor Championships, set for July 15-24 at Hayward Field and marking the first time the event will be held on U.S. soil.
Additionally, Team USATF U20 athletes will compete at the U20 Outdoor Championships June 23-25. The 2022 USATF U20 Outdoor Championships will serve as the selection event for the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships to be held in Cali, Colombia, August 1-6, 2022.

Leon and Welter will complete in the women's pole vault. Warner-Savage (100-meter) Allen (high jump) and Willis (long jump) will represent the Cardinals on the men's side. McPhail will compete in the U20 Outdoor Championships in the men's pole vault.

Recently named USTFCCCA Southeast Region Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year, Leon cleared a height of 4.60m (15' 1") in the pole vault to become the first women's outdoor national champion in program history. With the title, Leon earned first team All-America honors and became the fourth ever collegiate women's pole vaulter with three clearances of 4.60m (15' 1") and the only one this season with three marks over 4.57m (15' 0"). She also earned her second-straight ACC Outdoor Pole Vault title. She established her personal record height of 4.61m (15-1.5) at the Clark Wood Invitational.

Welter was a USTFCCCA All-America honorable mention after recording a mark of 4.05m (13' 3.5") to finish 18th in the NCAA Championships. Welter also earned a third-place finish at the ACC Outdoor Championship. She cleared a career-best bar of 4.36m (14-3.5) at the Clark Wood Invitational.

Allen earned his top finish at the NCAA Championships with a height of 2.18m (7' 1.75") to place seventh and secure first team All-American honors in the men's high jump. He notched a height of 2.18m (7-1.75) in the preliminary round to return to Eugene for the second straight season. The redshirt sophomore clinched the men's outdoor high jump title and earned first-team honors with the same height at the ACC Championships

Willis recorded a top mark of 7.54m (23' 5.5") to finish 11th in the men's long jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, earning second-team All-America honors. On his final attempt in the NCAA East Region Preliminary, Willis posted the third-best mark of the men's long jump field with a personal-best of 7.91m (25-11.5) to qualify for the NCAA Championship. The personal-best by Willis is tied for the second-best outdoor performance mark in program history. He finished third and earned first-team honors at the ACC Championships.

Warner-Savage finished in the top-three of his heat in the NCAA East Preliminary round with a school-record time of 10.15 seconds to secure automatic qualification for the men's 100-meter quarterfinals. The time surpassed the previous record of 10.27 seconds that Warner-Savage clocked in the prelims of the the ACC Outdoor Championships this season, he went on to earn all-ACC second team honors.

McPhail recorded a mark of 4.89m (16' 0.5") to finish 33rd in the men's pole vault at the NCAA East Region Preliminary Round. He earned All-ACC first team honors with a third-place and personal-best height of 5.13m (16' 10") at the ACC Championships. The height stands as the second-best outdoor performer mark in program history. He recorded three top-seven finishes in the men's pole vault this outdoor season with the ACC Championships podium as a season-best.
