
Cardinals Conclude 2021-22 Season at NCAA Outdoor Championships

LOUISVILLE, KY. – The University of Louisville track and field team closed out the 2021-22 season with impressive performances this week at the 2022 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Oregon's Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

"This week's NCAA Championships was an excellent conclusion to our outdoor season," said head coach Dale Cowper "We challenged our students to be great teammates this spring and they stepped up."

Gabriela Leon cleared a height of 4.60m (15' 1") in the pole vault to become the first women's outdoor national champion in program history and lead the women's team to a 25th-place finish, the program's best women's outdoor finish. In total, the Cardinals tallied two first team, three second team and three honorable mention All-Americans.

"As a staff, we are blessed to coach an outstanding group of committed young men and women that truly drive the daily culture of our program," added Cowper. "I am excited about the individual and team growth that our students showed this spring and look forward to building upon this momentum next year."

With the title, Leon earned first team All-American honors and became the fourth ever collegiate women's pole vaulter with three clearances of 4.60m (15' 1") and the only this season with three marks over 4.57m (15' 0"). Aliyah Welter also recorded a mark of 4.05m (13' 3.5") to finish 18th and earn honorable mention All-American honors in the women's pole vault.

In their first NCAA Outdoor Championship appearances, Katie Martin clocked a time of 58.06 seconds to place 15th and clinch second team All-American honors in the women's 400-meter hurdles, while Synclair Savage recorded honorable mention All-American honors in the women's long jump.

On the men's side, Trey Allen earned his top finish at a NCAA Championships with a height of 2.18m (7' 1.75") to place seventh and secure first team All-American honors in the men's high jump. In his third straight NCAA Outdoor Championships, Adar Sheere recorded a mark of 55.11m (180' 9") to finish 19th and earn honorable mention All-American honors in the men's discus throw.Â

In a pair of second team All-American finishes, Jeremiah Willis recorded a top-mark of 7.54m (23' 5.5") on his third attempt to finish 11th in the men's long jump and Sean Roth closed out his collegiate career with a height of 5.30m (17' 4.5") to place 16th in the men's pole vault. The men finished in 64th in the overall team standings.

Select Cardinals will return to Hayward Field to compete in the USATF Outdoor Championships from June 23-26.
