Gabriela Leon Earns First-Team Honors on Day One of NCAA Indoor Championships
March 11, 2022 | Track & Field
LOUISVILLE, Ky.  – Gabriela Leon and Sterling Warner-Savage recorded a pair of impressive performances on day one of the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
Â
Leon cleared a bar of 4.41m (14-5.5) for a sixth-place finish and first-team honors in the women's pole vault. The mark is the third highest bar in her indoor career.
Â
"I could not be more excited for Gabi Leon today," said head coach Dale Cowper. "She has battled throughout her entire career to continually seek improvement and her efforts today are a tremendous reward for her. She has always and will always represent Louisville at the highest level."
Â
Sterling Warner-Savage recorded a time of 6.61 seconds to finish 10th in the men's 60-meter. The time is the second fastest of his career and surpasses the 6.62 seconds mark that he clocked at his first NCAA Indoor Championship appearance in 2021.
Â
"While Sterling is going be dissatisfied with his result, he has proven to be a tremendous competitor and I am confident there will be greater moments in his future," added Cowper. "The 60-meter at this level always comes down to the hundredths of a second and today he was just a fraction away."
Â
Trey Allen is set to compete in the men's high jump tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. ET.
