New School Records Lead Cardinals at Commonwealth College Opener
December 03, 2022 | Track & Field
Trey Allen and Cameron Miller rewrote the Louisville books to begin the indoor season.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Trey Allen shattered the previous school record in the high jump to lead the Cardinals at the Commonwealth College Opener, clearing a height of 2.27m (7-5.25) as the University of Louisville track and field teams opened the 2022-23 indoor season on Saturday at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center.
For the meet, Louisville boasted seven event winners with 24 athletes making their debut for the Cardinals and 13 athletes earning personal best marks.
"I was excited to watch our squads open up at a high intensity today. Our students have been working hard this fall and today was an opportunity to show what they have been developing," said head coach Dale Cowper. "We have work to do but this was a terrific start to a season that can see our program elevate to a new level."
The highlight of the meet was undoubtedly Allen's record-setting day. Shortly after tying his previous personal best of 2.20m (7-2.5) to secure the victory, he initially broke the previous school record with a clearance of 2.25m (7-4.5). As the only jumper left in the competition, the bar was then raised to 2.27m (7-5.25) where he bested the school record he had set minutes earlier after failing on his first attempt.
"The whole week coming into the meet, I told myself that I was going to PR. I feel like I put in the work over the summer with training and it just manifested," said Allen. "I was trying to prove it to myself and I'm only going higher."
The men's high jump was dominated by the Cardinals with the top four spots being claimed by Louisville athletes. Behind Allen, freshman Brion Stephens was the runner-up in his collegiate debut, clearing a height of 2.20m (7-2.5) which stands as a Louisville freshman record and is now tied for the sixth-best performance in school history. Jonah Hyde and Luke Nichols both cleared 2.05m (6-8.75) to earn third and fourth, respectively.
Cameron Miller also set a new school record in the 300m dash in his Louisville debut. Miller, a transfer from Florida, clocked a split of 32.94 to earn a new personal-best in the event along with the new record.
Alba Cuns Iglesias also finished second in her collegiate debut in the women's triple jump, leaping 12.69m (41-7.75), while fellow freshman Autumn Bell placed fourth with a mark of 11.38m (37-4). In the women's long jump, Ariel Lawrence finished in fourth place with a jump of 5.85m (19-2.5), while Trae Burns also earned fourth place on the men's side in 7.12m (23-4.5) in his first collegiate meet. Adam Axelrod was fifth in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 6.91m (22-8).
The Cardinals' success in the field events continued with a pair of individual victories in the weight throw, as Katherine Coffey claimed the crown on the women's side with a heave of 19.10m (62-8) and Erik Fertig did the same for the men with a toss of 18.49m (61-9.75) on his way to a new personal best.
The Louisville women claimed three of the next four spots in the event, as Zoe Yeast achieved a new personal-best by over a meter on her way to a second-place finish in 19.09m (62-7.75). Tiana Bazie was fourth with a throw of 16.90m (55-5.5) while Brooklyn Hammons was fifth with a mark of 16.57m (54-4.5) in her collegiate debut. The men notched a trio of top-five finishes as Ethan Alyea was third posting a throw of 18.46m (60-6.75) and Adar Sheere finished fourth with a heave of 18.28m (59-1.75) along with Fertig's win. In the men's shot put, Jorge Contreras Nazario was the runner-up with a launch of 17.91m (58-9.25).
Aliyah Welter started strong in her fifth indoor season with the Cardinals, vaulting to a gold medal in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 4.05m (13-3.5). Lily Fleetwood earned a new personal-best height of 3.90m (12-9.5) to earn third place, while Auriane Viola cleared the same height to place fourth. Ty McPhail and Zach Frye both secured new personal bests in the pole vault on the men's side of 5.10m (16-8.75) to earn second and third, respectively. The mark brings the duo to a tie for the fourth-best performance in school history.
The women's 60m hurdles kicked off the track events, seeing freshman Riley Newkirk narrowly qualify for the finals, where she then placed fifth in 9.09 to begin her collegiate career. The women's 60m dash preliminaries followed as Taylor Herbert, Tiriah Kelley, and Synclair Savage qualified for the finals. Herbert finished as the runner-up in 7.39 while Savage finished in third place on her way to a new personal-best of 7.53. Two Cardinals earned berths in the 60m finals for the men, as freshman Jaylen Cole earned a third-place finish in the event, clocking 6.84 in his first collegiate meet.
Sterling Warner-Savage kicked off his year with a third-place finish in the 200m in 21.91, while freshman Noah Carmichael followed in 22.46 to earn fourth place. In the 300m, Katie Martin took fourth place for the women in 39.31. The men's 1000m saw a pair of Cardinals finish inside the top-five with Dylan Christian kicking off his collegiate career with a third-place finish in 2:30.03, while Zach Cader followed in a personal-best time of 2:36.13 to take fourth place.
The Cardinals also found success in the distance events, beginning with Lucija Viskovic's collegiate debut in the mile, where she placed third in 5:16.18. The men's mile saw a photo finish between two Cardinals, as Ethan Meyer took the win in 4:18.19 and Jason Krell followed in 4:18.23. J.B. Terrill was the third Louisville runner in the top five, taking fifth place in 4:25.64 in his first collegiate meet.
The 3000m distance was swept by the Cardinals as well, with Madeline Castleberry winning the women's race in 10:06.30 and Isaac Kiprop taking the men's title in 8:32.51. Lexie Paszkiewicz was the third woman to cross the line, fighting to a time of 10:41.69. Two freshmen followed strong cross country seasons to finish in the top five on the men's side with Jack Moore taking the silver medal in 8:38.25 and Spenser Wolf clocking 8:46.06 to place fourth.
The meet closed out with the 4x400m relay with both Louisville teams earning top-three finishes. On the women's side, the team of McKenzie Bell, Jourdin Edwards, Taylor Herbert, and Katie Martin blazed to a time of 3:42.70 to take second place. The men's team of Noah Carmichael, Jesse Casas, Robert Joseph, and Isiah Pantiere was the third team through the line in 3:19.03.
"Three performances stand out to me," added Cowper. "Trey Allen demonstrated that he is one of the top high jumpers in the NCAA by shattering his personal best and establishing a new school record at over 7'5". Brion Stephens secured what is certainly a new freshman record and a big personal best in the high jump at more than 7'2". And it was also great to see McKenzie Bell back on the track and able to run a strong split in the relay. She's worked hard to overcome challenges, and today should feel like a reward for her."
The Cardinals will resume their indoor season after the holiday break with the Cardinal Classic in Louisville on Jan. 13-14.
