Cards fall short in back-and-forth battle that saw all five goals scored in the second half
SYRACUSE, Ny. – The fourth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team lost a hard-fought road battle at No. 12 Syracuse in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup Friday evening at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
Â
The game featured three lead changes and two ties with all five goals scored in the second half. Syracuse outshot Louisville 13-9 with a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal while the Cardinals held a 6-5 edge in penalty corners. Sasha Elliott tied a season high with nine saves – including six in the second half.
Â
The teams played through a scoreless first half in which Louisville held a 4-3 edge in shots and a 2-1 lead in penalty corners with Elliott collecting three saves and Brooke Borzymowski picking up one stop for the Orange.
Â
Syracuse (13-3, 3-2 ACC) struck first when a scramble in front of the cage resulted in Quirine Comans received a pass from outside the circle and spun around to send a shot in over a sliding Elliott to put the Orange on top 1-0 with under four minutes left in the third quarter.
Â
The Cards (12-4, 1-4) countered two minutes later. Senior Mattie Tabor sent feed from the top right side of the circle to the left post and connected with a diving Katie Schneider. The graduate senior's sixth goal of the season evened the score at 1-1.
Â
Louisville took the lead in early the fourth quarter after Aimee Plumb converted on a penalty stroke to make the score 2-1 just two minutes into the frame.
Â
The Orange quickly responded with a goal by Willemijn Boogert to tie the contest midway through the fourth quarter.
Â
The game-winning goal came with four minutes left to play. A breakaway shot by Charlotte de Vries was stopped by Elliott, but Comans dove in for the rebound for her second goal of the game.
Â
Elliott was lifted for an extra field player with 2:48, and the Cardinals had one last chance to score, drawing a penalty corner with 33 seconds on the clock, but Louisville was unable to capitalize and the final score stood at 3-2.

JUSTINE SOWRY QUOTE
"Our players played their hearts out tonight. The pressure we put them under was the best it's been all season. We continue to make improvements on both sides of the ball, so it's disappointing that we did not get the win that our team worked hard for. Syracuse has a lot of weapons up front and we were not able to contain them at the very end. We need to regroup and bounce back on Sunday."
