Unbeaten Streak Ends at Seven for No. 11 Cardinals
October 14, 2022 | Men's Soccer
Louisville dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 5 Syracuse on Friday night.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 11th-ranked University of Louisville men's soccer team saw its unbeaten streak come to an end on Friday night with a 2-1 loss to No. 5 Syracuse at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium.
Louisville (8-3-2, 3-2-1 ACC) suffered its first loss since Sept. 10. All three of the Cardinals' losses this season have been to teams ranked in the top 10.
Syracuse (11-2-1, 5-1-0) jumped on the Cards early, netting a pair of goals in the opening half. The Orange got on the board in the 18th minute and then doubled their advantage 12 minutes later.
Shots were even at five through the first 45 minutes, but the Cardinals were unable to find the net. Brandon McManus had an early chance that saw his shot sail over the crossbar and had a later opportunity saved.
As they were in the first half, the shots were all square over the second 45 minutes. Sander Roed had a one-on-one moment with the keeper in the opening 10 minutes of the half, however his shot slid just outside the near post.
The Cardinals played a man up for the final 13 minutes of the match after a second yellow card sent off a Syracuse player. Louisville pressed forward on the attack for the remainder of the match and finally broke through with less than two minutes to play.
Roed took a shot off a free kick from just outside the box and Josh Jones tapped home a loose ball on the rebound to cut it to a one-goal deficit. That would be the final chance the Cards had though, with UofL unable to get another shot at the net over the final 100 seconds.
The shots were all even at 11 on Friday night and the physical match saw the teams combine for 37 fouls and seven cards.
Louisville continues its four-match homestand on Tuesday with a non-conference tilt against East Tennessee State. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
