Gabriela Leon's School Record Highlights Day One of Hokie Invitational
January 21, 2022 | Track & Field
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Gabriela Leon broke her own indoor school record with a height of 4.42m (14-6) in the women's pole vault to lead the Louisville track and field team in day one of the Hokie Invitational at Rector Field House.
The previous best indoor mark in program history was Leon's 4.40m (14-5.25) at the 2020 ACC Championships.
"I would first like to thank God for the opportunity to be able to do the sport I love and give him all the glory for the accomplishment today. Prior to the 4.42m attempt, I cleared 4.32m and I knew that bar could possibly get me to nationals but wouldn't solidify a spot, so I knew I had the clear the 4.42m bar in order to secure a spot," Leon said. "When I was in the air and knew I cleared the height I was so happy. It feels so good to have all the hard work behind the scenes that no one sees pay off. I am looking forward to continuing to get more opportunities to set new personal records and compete with top level athletes like the ones here today."
In his men's heptathlon debut, Paul Kallenberg opened the meet with a 7.13 60m before clearing 7.17m (23-6.25) to finish second in the long jump. The freshman continued to move up in the field with a second-place throw of 13.73 (45-0.5) in the shot put and a height of 1.94m (6-4.25) in the high jump to enter Saturday's final three events in first with 3152 points.
Sterling Warner-Savage and Isiah Pantiere each finished in the top-four in the men's 60-meter. Warner-Savage recorded a time of 6.68 to advance to the finals, where he ran a 6.73 to round out the top-three. while Pantiere posted a time of 6.83 in both the preliminaries and finals to finish on the heels of his teammate in fourth.
Grigoris Nikolaou closed out Friday's events with a personal-best mark of 15.22m (49-11.25) to finish fourth in the men's triple jump.
The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow for day two of the Hokie Invitational. The men's unseeded pole vault will kick off Saturday's events at 9:00 a.m. and the meet will close out with the men's 4x400 meter relay at 4:00 p.m.
