January 20, 2022 | Track & Field
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville track and field team heads to Blacksburg, Va. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21-22 for the Hokie Invitational at Rector Field House.
The Cardinals will compete with 11 other programs this weekend, including seven schools from the ACC. In addition to host Virginia Tech, Louisville will contend with Virginia, Duke, Clemson, Wake Forest, NC State and North Carolina before a return to the site for the ACC Indoor Championships in late February.
The meet opens with the heptathlon and pentathlon events on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. before the remainder of the day's events start at 4:00 p.m. Competition resumes Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. with the unseeded men's pole vault and concludes at 4:00 p.m. with the men's 4x400m relays.
Admission and parking are both free for spectators. For those attending, please read Virginia Tech Athletics' new vaccination announcement and comply with all COVID-19 related policies, which can be found here on Virginia Tech's website.
The Cardinals return to action after posting five event victories and 20 personal bests at last week's Blazer Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. Katherine Coffey shattered her previous best weight throw by almost two meters, recording a mark.44m (63-9.5) on her final attempt. Jeremiah Willis reached new heights with a jump of 7.71m (25-3.5) to secure his second long jump win in as many meets.
Several newcomers made substantial impacts last weekend. Ian Kibiwot made his indoor track and field debut with a first-place finish at 8:24.89 as the four Cardinals secured the top five spots in the men's 3000-meter. Styliana Ioannidou finished first in her high jump debut with a mark of 1.81m (5-11.25) that ranks fifth all-time in indoor program history, while Katie Martin placed second in the women's 500-meter with a personal-best time of 1:14.47.
