No. 5 Cardinals Secure First Road Win of the Season
September 03, 2021 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – Three different players tallied goals to give the fifth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team a 3-1 win over the University of Pennsylvania Friday in a neutral site game played at Princeton's Bedford Field.
Â
"It was nice to get our first road win on the board," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "For the most part I am pleased with how we handled their physicality and still played to our identity. Their attacking speed challenged us at times, so we can tidy up some of our pressing and defending around the circle. Overall, it was a solid performance with some lessons to learn on time management."Â
Â
The teams played through eight scoreless minutes before the Cardinals broke through on their third penalty corner of the game. Julie Kouijzer connected on a dish from Charlie van Oirschot for her first goal of the season to put Louisville on the scoreboard.
Â
The Cards added to their lead with another penalty corner goal in the second quarter when Katie Schneider deflected Kouijzer's shot for her team-best third goal of the season.
Â
The Quakers (0-1) answered two minutes later behind a goal from Allison Kuzyk, cutting the lead in half.
Â
UofL entered halftime up 2-1 after outshooting Penn 5-1 with a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal and a 4-1 edge in corners.
Â
The Cardinals tallied an insurance goal midway through the third quarter when Mattie Tabor directed a cross from the right side of the cage to the left post and Embry Jane Imorde tapped it in for her first collegiate goal, pushing Louisville's lead to 3-1.
Â
Penn increased its attack in fourth quarter, outshooting Louisville 4-2 and drawing three penalty corners, but the Cardinals' defense stood strong to preserve the 3-1 victory and remain undefeated on the season.
Â
In the game, Louisville outshot Penn 15-4 with a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Cardinals also earned six corners to Penn's four.
Â
Louisville (3-0) will return to action on Sunday when the Cardinals take on No. 13 Princeton at 1:30 p.m.
