Head coach Justine Sowry earns her 200th career victory

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Freshman Filippa Niebuhr's goal in the first quarter stood as the only goal of the game as the sixth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Indiana 1-0 in the 10^th annual Battle of the Border Friday evening at Trager Stadium. The win also marked UofL head coach Justine Sowry's 200^th career victory.

"Indiana brought a great game plan," said Sowry. "They are certainly a much-improved side that gave us a lot of trouble. We have not seen a press like that in quite some time and we were unable to problem solve. We were unable to connect very well at all. Certainly we had some opportunities, but to have only two shots on goal is pretty disappointing with how we've been attacking in the last few weeks and I thought defensively we were pretty sloppy as well. We can learn a lot from this game – thankful that we got the win."

The Cardinals (5-0) took advantage of their first penalty corner of the game midway through the first quarter. Senior Alli Bitting got the corner started and senior Mackenzie Karl provided the stop for Niebuhr who fired a shot into the left side of the cage for her third goal of the season.

Neither team was able to manufacture much offense throughout the first two quarters and the Cardinals took the 1-0 lead the break while after owning a 3-2 edge in shots. Each team was awarded one corner in the first half.

The Hoosiers (4-2) increased their attack in the third quarter, delivering four shots and earning four corners but the Cardinals' freshman goalkeeper Mila de Kuijer posted a pair of saves and Louisville's defense held Indiana at bay.

Louisville held a 2-0 advantage in shots and corners in the fourth quarter with Indiana goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge picking up one save. With just over two minutes remaining in the game, the Hoosiers lifted Loveridge in favor of an extra field player, but the Cardinals held strong for the 1-0 win.

UofL will return to action on Sunday when No. 11 Liberty visits Trager Stadium for a 1 p.m. start.

NOTES:
• Head coach Justine Sowry now has a career record of 200-98 (15^th season) and a 142-67 tally at Louisville while in her 11^th year with the Cardinals. During her time at Louisville, she has guided the Cardinals to 141 wins, six NCAA tournament appearances reaching the quarterfinals twice and advancing to the semifinals for the first time in program history in the 2020-21 season. Under Sowry's tutelage, Louisville has tallied a pair of conference titles, including the 2020 ACC Fall Regular Season crown, and a pair of runner-up finishes in the ACC Championships.
• Freshman Mila de Kuijer posted two saves en route to her third shutout of the season.
• The Cardinals now lead the series with Indiana 16-7
• Louisville has now won its last 10 home games after going 7-0 at Trager Stadium in the 2020-21 campaign.
• This marks the third straight 5-0 start for the Cardinals.
• UofL has outscored its first five opponents by a margin of 16-3.
