No. 5 Cardinals Open the Season with a 6-0 Win Over Ohio
August 27, 2021 | Field Hockey
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Erica Cooper scored a pair of goals and Katie Schneider dished out a career high three assists and added a goal to help the fifth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 6-0 win against Ohio in both teams' season opener Friday evening at Trager Stadium.
Â
"Great teamwork," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We were able to really connect with one another in the attack 25 and in the circle, it was outstanding. We've shifted our focus a little bit in the decision making with the ball carrier and getting those people into goal scoring positions. There was just such selfless play by so many players today and that was really pleasing."
Â
The win also marked the most goals scored by the Cardinals in a game since October 29, 2017 when UofL defeated Ohio 6-0 at Trager Stadium.
Â
The game featured a balanced offensive effort with seven players contributing goals or assists. In addition to Cooper and Schneiders' efforts, Mattie Tabor, Mia Duchars and Filippa Niebuhr also tallied goals while Aimee Plumb and Camryn Pichea and Niebuhr dished out assists. Mila de Kuijer collected four saves in her collegiate debut and first career shutout.
Â
After lightning in the area forced the contest to be delayed two hours, the Cardinals wasted little time getting the offense started when sophomore Mattie Tabor connected on a feed from Schneider in the second minute of the game.
Â
Duchars added to the lead with her first career goal after connecting on a pass from Pichea with under a minute remaining in the first quarter.
Â
The Cardinals' attack continued with three goals in the second quarter. Cooper tallied back-to-back scores in the first five minutes, both with assists from Schneider. With her two goals in the game, the senior from Louisville extended her career total to 15. Niebuhr recorded her first collegiate goal with penalty corner assists from Plumb and Pichea to increase Louisville's lead to 5-0.
Â
After delivering three assists in the game, Schneider connected on a goal of her own with an assist from Niebuhr to cap the scoring in the fourth quarter.
Â
In the game, the Cardinals outshot the Bobcats 18-6 with a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal. Louisville also held a 5-2 edge in penalty corners.
Â
Nele Graner (0-1) had two saves in the game while Macy Lotze registered five stops in goal for the Bobcats (0-1).
Â
Louisville (1-0) will return to action on Sunday when New Hampshire visits Trager Stadium.
