Schneidtmiller Steps Away from Coaching
July 21, 2021 | Field Hockey
University of Louisville assistant field hockey coach Erin Schneidtmiller has announced that she will leave her position to pursue other opportunities outside of collegiate coaching.
Â
"To have been a part of this program as both a student-athlete and coach will be something I cherish forever," said Schneidtmiller. Â I couldn't be more proud to be a Cardinal or more excited for the future of this program. I want to thank Justine for the opportunity and her unwavering support over the years. And of course, to all of our student-athletes who made this time so special. As I embark on new opportunities and join the alumni and fans on the other side, one thing is for sure, L1C4!"
Â
In her three seasons as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Schneidtmiller has helped guide the Cardinals to 43 wins and an NCAA Final Four (2020-21) two tournament quarterfinal appearance (2019, 2020-21).
Â
"We will always be grateful to Erin for her contributions to Louisville field hockey, both as a player and a coach," said Sowry. "She chose to play for her hometown school and helped build our foundation. We were thrilled when she joined our staff as an assistant coach, and she helped take out program to new heights. I thank her for her dedication, hard work and enthusiasm. We will miss her in our day-to-day activities, but we look forward to seeing her cheer is on from the stands. I wish Erin the best of luck as she begins her new chapter. She is a true example of a Cardinal Forever."
In 2020-21 Schneidtmiller helped guide the Cardinals to several historic achievements. The Cardinals finished the 2020-21 season with a 14-6 overall record and ranked No. 3 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) coaches poll and reached the program's first NCAA Final Four. In the fall, the Cards won the ACC regular season title and earned the top seed in the conference tournament after producing a 5-1 record which included a win over two-time defending national champion North Carolina, snapping the Tar Heels' NCAA-best 47-game win streak. Louisville posted a runner-up finish to UNC in the fall ACC tournament.
In the spring, the Cards went on to earn the highest ranking in program history at No. 2 despite the loss of three seniors who opted out for the spring campaign. UofL earned the overall No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament, marking the second straight season as a national seed, and went on to beat No. 6 UConn in the quarterfinals to advance to its first NCAA semifinal. Competing in their first-ever Final Four, the Cardinals battled with the No. 2 seed Michigan but eventually fell 2-1 in a sudden-victory shootout.
Schneidtmiller also helped UofL achieve numerous milestones in the 2019 campaign. The squad produced a 16-6 overall record, tying a program mark for wins and earned the overall No. 4 seed in the NCAA tournament, serving as a host site for the first time in program history. Louisville also made its first foray into the NCAA quarterfinals after defeating Michigan 2-1 in double-overtime in its first-round matchup.
Â
In her first year as an assistant coach at UofL, Schneidmiller helped guide the 2018 Cardinals to a 13-6 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the ACC, finishing third in the regular season standings. Louisville spent seven weeks in the NFHCA top 10, reaching as high as No. 8 and finished the year at No. 14. The Cards tied a program high with six All-Region selections and three All-Americans.  Â
Schneidtmiller joined Sowry's coaching staff after three seasons as an assistant coach at American University. During her time there, she helped direct the Eagles to 39 wins, two Patriot League finals and the 2016 league championship followed by an NCAA tournament appearance.
   Â
Prior to her stint at American, Schneidtmiller worked with the field hockey team at her high school alma mater Louisville's Mercy Academy and coached with Bluegrass Elite field hockey club. After graduating from Louisville in 2014, she continued her playing career in Bremen, Germany with the Bremer Hockey Club.
   Â
A four-year letterwinner with the Cardinals, Schneidtmiller earned first-team All-BIG EAST and All-West Region accolades in her senior campaign. That year, she ranked third on the team with nine goals and 21 points, helping lead Louisville to a 15-5 overall record and a share of the BIG EAST regular-season title. The three-time All-Big East Conference academic selection graduated from UofL in May 2014 with a bachelor's degree in communications.
