LOUISVILLE, Ky.- Meghan Schneider, a senior at the University of Louisville, is the recipient of the Elite 90 award for the 2020-21 NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship.
Schneider, majoring in biology with a concentration in genetics subcellular and a minor in Spanish, currently carries a 4.0 GPA. Schneider was presented with the award on Thursday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C.
The Elite 90, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 90 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.
Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have participated in their sport for at least two years with their school. All ties are broken by the number of credits completed.
Schneider becomes the fifth University of Louisville student-athlete the earn the award. Other UofL honorees include: Jimmy Crick (men's soccer, 2010-11), Wayne Blackshear (Men's Basketball, 2012-13), Jude Schimmel (Women's Basketball, 2012-13) and Colby Fitch (Baseball, 2016-17).
Schneider has been an invaluable member of the Cardinals' defense throughout her career, playing in every game as a Cardinal. The three-year starter and current team co-captain, earned NFHCA All-West Region Second Team honors in 2019 and was the NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week on October 7, 2020. She has helped direct the Cardinals to 17 shutouts over the last four years – including a 1-0 win against No. 6 UConn in the NCAA quarterfinals to send Louisville to the NCAA Semifinals for the first time in program history.
The San Diego, Calif., has been member of the USA Field Hockey U21 Team since 2018. Prior to that, Schneider played for the U.S. National U19 team.
Her success also extends to the classroom as she is only the second Louisville player to be named a NFHCA National Scholar of Distinction four times. She also is a four-time National Academic Squad member.
Additionally, she recently earned ACC recognition as one of Louisville's Top 6 for Service as a leader in working with the community.
