Cards Post School Record Finish at NCAA Championship
May 31, 2021 | Men's Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The University of Louisville men's golf team started off fast, but it wasn't enough to advance to the match-play round of the NCAA Championship at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
The Cardinals closed the tournament tying for ninth, which was the best finish in school history and were able to make the playoff round for the third time in school history. The finish bested the 10th-place ending from the 2008 championship.
Louisville tied with Sam Houston State after shooting 289-288-287-288=1,152. The Cardinals finished at 32-over par and posted the third-highest finish by schools in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Florida State placed sixth and North Carolina was eighth.
"I'm very proud of this team, UofL head coach Ryan Blagg said. "A chance to compete to win a National Championship is why our three seniors, Devin, John and Trevor returned for an additional year. We fought hard all week and just came up short. We have a great group of young men and despite the many challenges that we endured with the pandemic this season they came together and recorded the best finish in program history at the NCAA Championship. I'm excited for what lies ahead for our exiting seniors and this team."
The Cardinals looked like they were going to make a charge early and put some pressure on the teams near the cut line. The top eight teams advance to Tuesday's match-play round.
Devin Morley birdied the first two holes and John Murphy scored on his second hole to put the Cardinals at 3-under during the early part of the round. The Cardinals entered the day 11 shots off the line needed to advance.
However, the Cardinals' couldn't sustain the run, finishing the first nine holes at 4-over-par despite a birdie by Matthias Schmid on No. 17.
After making the turn, the Cardinals got to as low as 3-under-par for the round, but three consecutive bogeys on the seventh hole ended any chance the Cardinals had to advance to Tuesday's match-play round.
Schmid, who shot 72 on Monday, finished as the top golfer for the Cardinals over the four days of the championship. He shot 72-69-72-72= 285 to finish in a tie for 29th place. He played a consistent round on Monday, posting only three bogeys and the birdie on No. 17. He registered seven consecutive pars until that birdie and then bogeyed No. 1 and No. 8.
He closes the book as the all-time leader in career stroke average at UofL and owns 20 top-10 finishes, including a pair this season.
Trevor Johnson tied for 39th after carding 68-77-71-73=289. On Monday, Johnson fired 73, registering five bogeys and a pair of birdies. He opened the back nine holes at 2-over and would bogey No. 1 and No. 3 before registering birdies on No. 4 and No. 8.
Jiri Zuska tied for 44th in the championship after shooting 71-76-72-71=290. He played a steady round, shooting 1-over-par on the back and even-par on the front. He helped the Cards jump out to a fast start by draining a long putt on No, 13 for a birdie and added another one on No. 15. The native of the Czech Republic birdied No. 4 and bogeyed No. 7.
Murphy tied for 52nd after his rounds of 78-69-72-72=291 to finish at 11-over. He recorded an early birdie and then posted consecutive birdies on No. 4 and No. 5 as the Cards tried to make a late charge to the eighth spot.
Morley, who played the last three rounds, finished tied for 83rd after carding a 14-over-par. He saved his best round of the championship for today as he posted those two birdies on the first two holes.
UofL ended its season with four fourth place finishes and played its best golf at the end. After finishing in ninth place at the ACC Championship, the Cardinals closed the regional in fourth and posted a top-10 finish at the National Championship.
The Cardinals return two of the five players that started the championship in Zuska and Max Kennedy.
