Cards Advance to the Final 15 of the NCAA Championship

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – It looks like the University of Louisville men's golf team will live to fight another day.
The Cardinals put together their best round of the of the tournament to assure themselves a position in the final 15 of the NCAA Golf Championship at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
It will mark the third time in five tries that the Cardinals advanced to the fourth day of the championship, and the first time since 2016.
The Cardinals fired a 7-over-par 287 to finish in 12th place by shooting a 24-over-par 864 (289-288-287) to end the day in the top 15. The Cardinals are 11 shots back from moving on to match play, which would begin on Tuesday with the final eight teams.
Oklahoma State leads the way at 12-under-par and is the only school to reach that status. Oklahoma is second at 1-over and Arizona State, Illinois and Florida State round out the top five.
UofL is one of six Atlantic Coast Conference squads to reach the final 15, joining Florida State, Wake Forest, North Carolina, Clemson and Georgia Tech.
"I am really pleased that we are to advancing to the final round of stroke play," UofL head coach Ryan Blagg said. "The guys continue to grind out good rounds and are playing better everyday. They haven't been getting ahead of themselves staying patient all week. Tomorrow will require a great team round of golf. We are ready for the challenge."
The Cardinals recorded seven birdies on the day, but had 14 bogeys during Sunday's round, which was played in 98-degree heat.
Trevor Johnson, who shot the lowest round for the Cardinals with a 68 in the first round, was the low player on Sunday, shooting a 1-over 71 to move into a tie for 42nd place after the first three rounds.
After recording a bogey on No. 1, Johnson would birdie No. 2 and No. 4 with a long putt to play the front at even par. He went on to register eight pars and a bogey on the back to move to plus six for the championship.
Matthias Schmid put together an up-and-down round on Sunday, posting a 2-over 72 to sit in a tie for 22nd place.
He started fast by notching a birdie on No. 2. Driving the ball down the middle on a short par 4. Schmid drilled his approach shot to within 12-15 feet and knocked in the putt. He would add another one on No. 6 when he put a shot to withing three for his second birdie.
The native of Germany put himself in position to score on a few holes on the back and recorded eight pars and just one bogey.
John Murphy, who carded a 69 on Saturday, shot a respectable 72 on the difficult golf course. He would birdie No. 8 and No. 10 to move into a tie for 67th place. Jiri Zuska, who is also tied for 67th place, rebounded from his six-over-par 76 on Saturday to also shoot 72 on Sunday, with a birdie on the sixth hole.
Devin Morley shot a 6-over-par 76 to end his second round in a tie for 152h place.
The Cardinals will open the fourth round when they tee off at 1:55 EST off the No. 10 tee.
