Cardinals Set for ACC Championships
April 22, 2021 | Men's Golf
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -Â The University of Louisville men's golf team begins postseason play Friday, April 23 with the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, held at the Capital City Club - Crabapple Golf Course in Atlanta, Georgia.
 Â
The Cardinals are competing in their sixth championship, and are looking to post their first top-five finish since joining the league in 2014. The Cardinals best finish was sixth during the 2016 championship.
Â
After fall golf was canceled in the ACC due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Louisville had seven team events this spring to prepare for postseason. Of those seven events, the Cardinals posted three finishes in the top five. Matthias Schmid, the No. 116 golfer in the Golfstat rankings, leads the Cardinals with a 72.43 stroke average, while John Murphy and Jiri Zuska are next in line with identical 72.86 averages.
Â
Course
The Championship event will be held at the par-70, 7,319-yard Crabapple Golf Course at the Capital City Club in Atlanta, which hosted the 2013 NCAA Division I National Championship. This is just the second time the ACC Championship has been played in the state of Georgia and the first time since 1997.
Â
The Capital City Club of Atlanta was founded in 1883. Golf became part of the club's activity mix in 1999, when 600 acres were purchased by the Club for the planned Crabapple clubhouse and golf course. In October 2001, the 18-hole, Tom Fazio-designed golf course was completed. A year later, construction on the clubhouse was finished. Since opening its doors, Crabapple has played host to numerous golf events, including the American Express WGC, the AJGA Canon Cup and the NCAA Southeast Regional, as well as the NCAA Division I National Championship (2013).
Â
Format
There will be three rounds of stroke play over two days. The first two rounds will be Friday, April 23 and the final round will be Saturday, April 24.
