Cardinals Advance in ACC Tournament with 4-1 Win Over BC
April 21, 2021 | Women's Tennis
Louisville will face No. 5 seed Duke on Thursday at 10 a.m. in Rome, Ga.
ROME, Ga. -- The weather was cold, but the Cardinals had a hot-hitting hand as the University of Louisville women's tennis team downed Boston College 4-1 in the first round of the 2021 ACC Tennis Championships Wednesday morning in Rome, Ga.
Â
"Obviously, it feels good to get a win in the ACC Tournament," said Mark Beckham, UofL head coach. "The level is so high, nothing is ever easy. The thing that impressed me today was that we played better on the most important points. Sometimes we have hoped for good things to happen but today we made good things happen on big points."Â
Â
UofL, which began the match an hour late due to cold conditions, took the doubles point. The Cards dropped the first match, when the No. 53-ranked pair of Laura Lopez and Marice Aguiar downed Louisville's Chelsea Sawyer and Raven Neely 6-2. But the Cards pushed back when Dina Chaika and Tatiana Simova defeated Reagan Posorske and Loren Haukova 6-2. The No. 64-ranked Cardinal duo of Andrea Di Palma and Rhea Verma clinched the point with a 7-5 win over No. 89-ranked Yufei Long and Kylie Wilcox.
Â
In singles, Jelena Vujanic scored the first point for UofL with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Maria Ross. Boston scored its first point when No. 107-ranked Kylie Wilcox downed Raven Neely 6-3, 7-5. UofL's Rhea Verma upset No. 102-ranked Laura Lopez 6-1, 7-5 to take the Cards up 3-1. Louisville clinched the match point when Dina Chaika held out to win 6-0, 3-6, 6-0 in a three-set win over Reagan Posorske at the No. 6 slot.
Â
UofL will play No. 5 seed Duke tomorrow at 10 a.m. The two teams will meet for the eighth time with the Blue Devils leading the series, 7-0. Earlier this season, Duke registered a 7-0 victory in Durham, N.C. The Blue Devils and Cardinals have never met in ACC Championship play.
Â
"We have a big challenge tomorrow against Duke, but we are ready to challenge them and make them earn what they get," said Beckham.
