April 18, 2021 | Men's Tennis
Louisville, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team closed out the regular season Sunday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center with a 4-1 loss to No. 5 Virginia. With the decision, the Cardinals drop to 9-11 (3-8, ACC) on the season, while the Cavaliers improve to 17-2 (12-0, ACC).
"The score was closer than what it showed," said Coach Rodrigo da Silva. "We will have to regroup and get ready for the ACC Tournament next week."
Prior to the match, the program recognized Clement Filho, who will be graduating in May with his Masters in Sport Administration. Filho did not participate in the match against UVA due to an injury he suffered earlier this season.
The match opened with a battle to secure the doubles point. The Cards and Cavaliers split courts one and three, with Kyle Tang and Alex Wesbrooks falling to Ryan Goetz and Gianni Ross 6-0 at the three-spot and the No. 63-ranked duo of Fabien Salle and Matthew Fung taking down Jeffrey Von Der Schulenburg and Inaki Montes 6-2 at No. 1.
Court two was a battle between No. 89 Tin Chen and Sergio Hernandez against William Woodall and Matthew Lord. At one point the match was all locked up at 5-5. However, UVA pushed through, winning the court 7-5 to earn the early edge.
In singles, Virginia kept its momentum going with No. 96 Ryan Goetz defeating Josh Howard-Tripp 6-2, 6-3 pushing the Cavaliers to a 2-0 lead. No. 49
Montes earned UVA's second point with a 7-6, 6-1 in over No. 71 Hernandez.
No. 57 Salle scored Louisville's lone point in the match on court two with a 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 victory over Chris Rodesch. To clinch the match for Virginia, No. 24 Schulenburg took down Tin Chen 7-6, 7-5 on court one.
"We almost took the doubles point, which would have been really good for us," said assistant coach Mario Rincon. "Fabien had a huge win for us in singles. He has been a champ all season and I truly believe he is one of the best players in the country."
Up Next: Louisville (9-11, 3-8 ACC) has earned the No. 10 seed in the ACC Men's Tennis Championship and will take on seventh-seeded Duke on Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga. For the complete ACC bracket visit here.
