April 17, 2021 | Field Hockey
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - After three goals during the fourth quarter, No. 4 University of Louisville field hockey concluded the regular season with a 4-1 victory over No. 9 Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
Â
With the win, Louisville wraps up the regular season with a 13-5 overall record and a 3-3 mark in ACC spring play.
Â
"This game meant the world. We re-centered our focus at halftime and came out of the half a lot better, which is absolutely fantastic. I think we were able to get momentum back and capitalize on those goals," said head coach Justine Sowry. "We had to win it to give us a chance at the NCAA tournament. To get that win on Senior Day means so much to us and our team."
Â
After a quiet opening quarter, Maggie Dickman put the Demon Deacons (6-10, 3-2 ACC) on the board first 6:29 into the second frame. The Cardinals' best scoring chance came from Mercedes Pastor soon after, but her shot was stopped by the Wake Forest goalkeeper Tori Glaister.
Â
Louisville trailed 1-0 heading into the break, despite leading Wake Forest 4-2 in shots and holding a 2-0 advantage in corners.
Â
A foul on a Wake Forest defender during a Louisville corner awarded the Cardinals a penalty with 7:56 left in the third quarter. With her shot going in the lower right corner of the cage, Pastor converted the penalty and tied the game at one apiece.
Â
The Cardinals took a 2-1 lead less than two minutes into the fourth quarter. Emilia Kaczmarczyk sent a pass through a trio of Wake Forest defenders to connect with Aimee Plumb, who found the back of the net.Â
Â
A Wake Forest foul gave the Cardinals another penalty corner opportunity with 10:43 to go. Charlie van Oirschot received the insertion from Plumb to set up Julie Kouijzer, who fired a shot past the Glaister.
Â
A minute later with 3:20 left on the clock, Plumb connected with Katie Schneider for the Cardinals' third goal of the quarter en route to posting a 4-1 victory on Senior Day.
Â
Louisville outshot Wake Forest 12-3 and held a 5-4 edge in corners. Between the posts, Sam Minrath (5-3) finished the game with two saves.
Â
Glaister had three stops for the Demon Deacons.
Â
The Cardinals await the selection show on Sunday, April 25 at 10 p.m. ET to vie for an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament.
