Louisville Men's Soccer Cruises to 3-0 Victory in Spring Opener
March 04, 2021 | Men's Soccer
The Cardinals got three second half goals on their way to the win.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Led by a barrage of second-half goals, the University of Louisville men's soccer team opened the spring portion of the season with a 3-0 victory over North Carolina State in Raleigh, N.C., on Thursday.
Thursday marked the first of six matches that the Cardinals are scheduled to play in this spring. The all-ACC slate serves as a continuation of the fall campaign, where all records and statistics will be carried over to form one overarching resume.
Despite the four-month layoff, Louisville showed no signs of rust throughout the first fifteen minutes of the match. The Cardinals featured an attack-heavy offense that routinely pressured their hosts in the final third of the field. NC State eventually settled in and flipped the script on the visitors, forcing Louisville's back four to spend the rest of the opening portion defending a pressing attack. Despite multiple opportunities, redshirt senior transfer Detre Bell recorded his first clean sheet in goal, making a critical save to keep both teams off the scoreboard before the break.
Louisville got its offense back on track in the second half, tilting the field in its favor with the same attack that was featured from the opening kick. Aboubacar Camara finally broke through in the 47th minute when he handled a pass from Elijah Amo right inside the six-yard box before sending a strike into the back of the net.
Pedro Fonseca notched his team-high fourth goal of the season to push the lead to 2-0 after Louisville was awarded a penalty kick on a called handball in the 52nd minute. The junior forward looked like he would record his second goal of the evening ten minutes later before having it knocked away by a recovering defender. Carlos Sanchis then handled the loose ball in traffic to tap home the Cardinals' third and final goal of the night.
Louisville will return home next Friday as it welcomes Syracuse to Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
