Pastor's late goal seals the win for the Cardinals
LOUISVILLE, KY- Senior Mercedes Pastor's goal with two minutes remaining in the game lifted the University of Louisville field hockey team to a 2-1 win against Virginia Saturday afternoon. With the win the Cards improve their record to 10-3 overall (1-1 ACC).
"When you get your first ACC win, you're pretty happy and doing it at Trager Stadium, as well, certainly makes a great day," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "A very unusual first ACC win in the springtime, but we are super pumped, especially against a very good UVA opponent."
The teams played through a scoreless first quarter before the Cardinals broke through with a penalty corner goal in the second quarter. Senior Alli Bitting got the play started and senior Megan Schneider provided the stop for Pastor who sent the ball in for Charlie van Oirschot to get a tip, giving Louisville a 1-0 lead into the second half.
Virginia (4-9, 0-2) responded in the fourth quarter off of a goal from Annie McDonough to even the score at 1-1 with just over five minutes left to play.
The Cardinals were awarded a penalty stroke with under two minutes remaining. Pastor converted her attempt to give Louisville a 2-1 lead with her team-best tenth goal of the season.
Virginia was awarded a penalty corner with a minute remaining but Louisville's defense held strong to secure the win.
In the game, Virginia outshot Louisville 9-8, but the teams were an even 6-6 for shots on goal and Louisville had an 8-1 edge in penalty corners. Louisville goalkeeper Sam Minrath collected five saves while Lauren Hausheer registered six stops.
UofL will return to action on Monday, March 22, when the Cards travel to Oxford, OH to take on Miami University.
