March 12, 2021 | Track & Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Redshirt sophomore Sterling Warner-Savage set a school record and advanced to Saturday's 60m finals while Aliyah Welter finished 13th in the pole vault in her first NCAA Indoor Championship appearance.
Â
In the first heat of men's 60m prelims, Warner-Savage established a new school record of 6.62 and finished fifth among the eight qualifiers. The time is also a personal best for Warner-Savage, who broke his own school record of 6.65, set on January 16, 2021 at the McCravy-Green Invitational and matched on February 5 at the Virginia Tech Doc Hale Elite. He now owns the top 10 times in program history, nine of which have been recorded this season.
Â
Warner-Savage will compete in Saturday's final at 3:10 p.m. (ET). To view live scoring visit here, watch on ESPN3 here.
"Sterling Warner-Savage did an excellent job of keeping his composure today," said UofL head coach Dale Cowper. "He was able to close well and secure a place in tomorrow's final.  Anything can happen in the final round and I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do."
Â
Welter earned second team All-America honors after posting a 13th place finish in the pole vault with a height of 4.16m (13-7.75) – her second-best performance of the season.
Â
"Aliyah was impressive today in her first trip to the NCAA championships," said Cowper. "She is yet another example of what happens when a student shows up every day with the intention of getting better. She'll continue to progress on the runway but I couldn't be more excited about the way she handled today."
