LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville track and field teams kick off the 2021-22 season this Saturday, Dec. 11 as hosts of the inaugural Cardinal Classic at the Norton Healthcare and Sport Learning Center. The meet marks the first time in program history that the Cardinals will open the indoor season at home.
Â
"We are excited to host the first annual Cardinal Classic at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center," said head coach Dale Cowper. "We will see a number of outstanding performances this weekend and our team is excited to compete before departing campus for winter break."
Â
In addition to Louisville, the five-team field will include Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, Campbellsville and University of the Cumberlands.
Â
The meet starts with the women's high jump at 1:00 p.m., while track events will follow with the women's 500m at 2:20 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public, but fans not in attendance can follow the live stats link attached above. Parking will be $5 per person with a maximum charge of $15 per car.
Â
The Cardinals return seven All-ACC Indoor honorees in Aliyah Welter, Purity Sanga, Sterling Warner-Savage, Gabriela Leon, Auriane Viola, Trey Allen and Jonah Hyde. Welter is set to compete after tying an indoor school-record pole vault with a clearance of 4.32m (14' 2") to place second at the 2021 ACC Indoor Championships. The redshirt junior followed that performance with second team All-American honors, clearing 4.16m (13' 7.75") at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Â
Sterling Warner-Savage returns for the men's team after setting a school-record 6.62 60m to earn first team All-American honors at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships. The redshirt junior owns the top 10 spots on Louisville all-time 60m performance list, posting the record mark in the 60m prelims to advance to the finals, where he clocked his third-best time of the indoor season at 6.67.
