No. 10/13 Cardinals Sit in Second After Day 1 at Purdue Invitational

Louisville notches five wins with 10 NCAA B-cuts
W. LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Through 12 events, the No. 10/11 University of Louisville men's and women's swimming and diving team sit in second place after the first day of racing at the Purdue Invitational at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.

The Cardinal women trail only Northwestern and the men trail host Purdue. UofL put up 10 NCAA B-cuts with five wins in the finals tonight.

In the women's 200 free relay, the Cardinals foursome of Gabi Albiero (22.47), Arina Openysheva (22.81), Alena Kraus (22.81), and Tristen Ulett (21.97) won the final with a time of 1:29.31, missing an NCAA B-cut by .10 of a second.  The Louisville men touched second with a time of 1:19.79 put up by Michael Eastman (19.78), Caleb Duncan (19.63), Colton Paulson (19.27) and Evgenii Somov (19.26).

Liberty Williams shaved seven seconds off her prelim time to touch third in the 500 freestyle, touching third in 4:48.57. Cardinal newcomer Gustavo Saldo touched second in the men's 500 free, dropping almost seven seconds from his morning swim for a B-cut. Teammate Hayden Curley was fifth in the A-final with a time of 4:22.69 making a B-cut as well. Tyler Klawiter won the B-final in in 4:24.63.

Abby Hay was into the wall first for the Cardinals the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.00. Teammate Tristen Ulett was third with a time of 1:58.60. Mariia Astashkina was sixth as the third Cardinal in the A-final. She went 1:59.16. All three Cards posted an NCAA B-cut.  On the men's side, UofL's Daniel Sos won the A-final with a time of 1:44.28, trimming three seconds off his prelim time for a B-cut. Evgenii Somov was third with a time of 1:45.33 (B-cut) and Colton Paulson was the third Card in the A-Final was eighth with a time of 1:48.56.  In the B-final, Luke Shourds was fourth with a time of 1:48.23.

In the 50 freestyle, Gabi Albiero was second, turning in a 22.25 for a B-cut. Arina Openysheva was sixth in the A-final with a B-cut time of 22.71. Alena Kraus was seventh in the A-final with a time of 22.98. In the B-Final, Kaylee Wheeler was second with a time of 23.18 and Olivia Livingston was seventh in the B-Final with a time of 23.54. On the men's side, Michael Eastman was fifth posting a 20.05. Caleb Duncan was seventh I the A-Final with a 20.09.

Riley Bullock made the finals in the 3M springboard and finished eighth with a score of 282.95 to qualify for NCAA Zones. Grace Leonard scored a 186.70. Daniel Pinto made an NCAA Zone cut with his score of 324.30 on the 1M springboard where he finished fourth. Kivanc Gur was ninth with a score of 296.90 and Alekzander Popper was ninth with a score of 275.20. Â

In the final relays of the day, the Cardinals won the 400 Medley relay when Tristen Ulett (53.73), Kaylee Wheeler (59.41), Gabi Albiero (51.33) and Arina Openysheva (48.17) combined for a B-Cut time of 3:32.64. The B-Relay team was fourth when Paige Hetrick (53.54), Mariia Astashkina ( 59.65), Alena Kraus (52.53) and Madie Hall (50.09) combined forces with a time of 3:35.81.  The Cardinal Men won the 400 Medley Relay when Mitchell Whyte (46.11), Evgenii Somov (51.98), Neal Morsi (47.25) and Michael Eastman (42.46) with a time of 3:07.80.
