LOUISVILLE, Ky. Â -- Louisville plays is second of three games in seven days as the Cardinals face the Furman Paladins in the KFC Yum! Center on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
UofL opened its 108th season of collegiate basketball and its 12th in the KFC Yum! Center with a 72-60 victory over Southern on Tuesday. Â Louisville limited Southern to 30.9 percent shooting from the field, gained 43 of its points off the bench and held a 54-40 rebounding advantage with three Cardinals grabbing eight or more rebounds. Â It was UofL's 18th straight opening game victory.
Samuell Williamson's 14 points and 14 rebounds against Southern marked his fifth career double-double and the second-highest rebounding total. Â He has grabbed double-digit rebounds in six of his last eight games dating back to last season, when his 8.1 rebounds per game on the year ranked third in the ACC.
The opening game scoring for two Cardinals are among the top 15 scoring debuts in Louisville history. Â Noah Locke scored a team-high 16 points against Southern, tied for the 11th-most by a Cardinal in a career debut. Â Matt Cross totaled 15 points, five rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot to tie for 13th in scoring for a UofL debut. Â Cross suffered a dislocated ring finger on his right hand, but returned to play with the finger taped. Â Locke has scored in double figures in the Cardinals' first three outings, including a pair of exhibition games.
Furman opened its season Nov. 9 with a 118-66 victory over North Greenville, making a school-record 22-of-44 three-pointers in the game and handing out a school-record 34 assists. Â Furman was predicted to finish in second place in the preseason Southern Conference poll behind league favorite Chattanooga, while guards Mike Bothwell and Alex Hunter were selected to the 10-person preseason all-conference team. Â The Paladins returns 12 letterwinners from last year's 16-9 team that finished third in the SoCon with a 10-5 record. Â Three starters return in Bothwell, Hunter and forward Jalen Slawson.
Louisville has a 4-0 series record against Furman. Â In the last meeting between the two schools 19 years ago, Louisville prevailed 104-63 on Dec. 22, 2002 in Freedom Hall as Marvin Stone and Taquan Dean led the Cardinals with 21 points apiece. Â Stone, who combined this game with one other to earn ESPN.com national player of the week with his performance, added 13 rebounds while Dean hit 5-of-6 three-pointers.
