LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Katie Schneider scored a pair of goals to help lead the third-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team to a 4-1 win against Miami (Ohio) Monday evening at Trager Stadium. Julie Kouijzer and Mackenzie Karl also scored as the Cardinals improve to 11-1 on the season.
"We are really pleased with this win," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "To be honest, the last couple of weeks, we've been a little sluggish. We're tired, physically and mentally. We've had a lot of overtime games and some tight games. But we've broken our season down into quarters and this was our last game of that second quarter… Tonight they came out on all cylinders firing and I'm just really pleased with the hockey that was played."
The teams played through a scoreless first period with Miami owning a 2-0 edge in shots. The Cardinals broke through in the fourth minute of the second quarter when they capitalized on their first penalty corner of the game. Aimee Plumb got the play started and Charlie van Oirschot provided the stop for Kouijzer who fired a shot past Miami goalkeeper Isabelle Perese for her fifth goal of the season.
Three minutes later, Schneider deflected Camryn Pichea's shot into the cage to add an insurance goal.
Scoring chances in the first half were limited and Cardinals took the 2-0 lead into halftime after both teams delivered a pair of shots and Louisville held a 2-1 edge in corners.
UofL attacked early out of the break with Schneider tallying her team-best seventh goal of the season, this time with an assist from Emilia Kaczmarczyk to increase the lead to 3-0.
Mackenzie Karl completed the Cardinals' scoring in the fourth quarter when she collected a rebound off of a RedHawk defender's stick and delivered a reverse stick shot into the cage for her second career goal to put Louisville on top 4-0.
Miami (6-8) got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter when Claudia Negrete Garcia connected on a penalty corner goal with assists from Jenna Kirby and Noor Breedijk, bringing the final score to 4-1.
