No. 4 Cardinals Down No. 25 James Madison With Plumb's Overtime Goal

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The fourth-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated No. 25 James Madison 1-0 behind sophomore Aimee Plumb's overtime penalty corner goal Sunday afternoon at JMU Field Hockey Complex.

Plumb's seventh goal of the season marked her second straight overtime gamewinner as the Cardinals improved to 15-2 on the season and extend their win streak to four games. Freshman Mila de Kuijer collected five saves en route to her ACC-leading seventh shutout of the season.

"We were fortunate to squeak out another win and to close out a fantastic road weekend," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "JMU has a very talented squad and gave us a lot of trouble when they had the ball. Defensively we can learn a lot and we look forward to breaking down the game. With the combination of their abilities and a surface that challenged us, we were unable to play our style of game."

Scoring opportunities were limited in the first half with JMU outshooting Louisville 4-2 with each team delivering a shot on goal and Louisville owning a 3-0 advantage in corners.

In the third quarter, the Dukes (10-6) increased their attack, firing off three shots on goal, but Louisville's Mila de Kuijer turned back all three attempts with a trio of saves. The Cardinals earned on corner, were unable to get a shot off in the opportunity.

The Dukes had a chance to score in the closing minutes of regulation when they earned their first corner of the contest, but de Kuijer picked up another save

With the game still scoreless at the end of regulation, the teams moved to a 10-minute 7v7 overtime period. Each squad traded possessions before the Cardinals earned a penalty corner in the fourth minute of the extra frame. Sophomore Mia Duchars got the play started and junior Julie Kouijzer sent a a feed to Plumb who connected on a sweep from the top of the circle for the 1-0 win.

In the game, JMU outshot Louisville 10-6 with a 5-4 edge in shots on goal while the Cardinals held a 6-1 advantage in corners.

The Cardinals will return to Trager Stadium for its regular season finale when the Cardinals play host to No. 6 Syracuse on Oct. 29 at 3 p.m.
