Cardinals Team Up With Churchill Downs To Host Tennis Clinics

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team is collaborating with the Churchill Downs Racing Committee Backstretch Recreation program and the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to provide the opportunity for equine workers at the storied racetrack to learn and play tennis.
The Churchill Downs Recreation Tennis program consists of six clinics that are held on Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. Mario Rincón, assistant coach of the men's tennis team, said the clinics are focused on teaching technique and strategy.
"They're picking it up very fast to the point that they're able to keep the rally going themselves and also learning how to serve." Rincón said.
Rebecca Richart, the backstretch events coordinator at Churchill Downs, said that some of the people attending the clinic are learning tennis for the first time, but they have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the program and to learn from Rincón and the players.
"I think it's a great thing, it's a lot of fun, it's awesome that they want to exercise a little bit and have fun and compete," Rincón said about the program. "Hopefully, in the future they will learn how to play, they will teach their kids how to play, I'm all about teaching the game and it's a fun thing to do for our players as well."
Rincón also said he hopes to see the group numbers grow as the program continues and that the USTA of Kentucky has provided equipment for those who participate in the program.
"We like playing tennis with them, it's great to see them smile and enjoy the sport," said sophomore Kyle Tang. "This has been a really good opportunity for us to give back to our local community."
The next clinics will be held on Oct. 19 and Oct. 26 at 5:30 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
